My 76 BW35 auto has a foot rest which I find very useful. If you lift the carpet on the drivers side down by where your left foot would rest, you should see two threaded holes in the transmission tunnel for mounting the foot rest.
I love deadlines - I like the whooshing sound they make as they pass by!
I really missed not having a foot rest on my mk1 on long journeys and ended up making one. IIRC there were no captive nuts so I had to bolt it on which was a bit of a PITA

I've got quite long legs and have always removed the footrests in all the cars I've had. I've resorted to stripping out the mounded foam under the carpets in recent cars. What I might try is rotating the footrest so it's further back, otherwise it's going on ebay!
