    Fitting chrome trim

    Hi
My Stag is away at the moment being repainted. It will be back in a few weeks and I will start the job of re fitting all the bits. I am looking for advice as to fitting the chrome trim for the front and rear of the car. I have new clips to go inside the trim and this will cut into the new paint. Is there anything I need to do before pushing the trim into place?

    Many thanks Paul

I don’t use the clips I use a small bead of silicone inside chrome piece and tape it on to the body until it sets. Much better finish as chrome sits closer now to body and as you said the clips cut into the paint.

Agree withe the slicone thats what Ive done on mine but I know some who have done this but filled the trim with dum dum between the silicone blobs that hold the trim, This is ok but I know when I was an apprentice on Triumph they did this in the body shop which is great for stopping water resting on the inside of the trim but it left black water mark runs on the paint work thus having to keep on top of the polishing paintwork

So the silicone acts as a glue and a sealant? Do you apply it along the entire lenght of the trim or just blubs.
        Thanks for your replys

Never managed to keep trim in place using just silicone sealant, so used the clips.
Blob loads of waxoyle on the painted lip and clips before pushing in place, and drizzle warm waxoyle along the length once fitted.
          Mike.

Purchase a tube of Tigerseal. Used it on both our Stag and GT6.

My trims are also fitted using sealer(by the previous owner) and I haven't had any issues with them coming loose. I recently used some clear silicone sealer when I changed the number plates from the modern reflective type back to the old fashioned black/silver ones. They have stuck on nicely and of course there's no unsightly screws on show. Just make sure you buy some decent stuff rather than the cheapo sort that Poundland sell

I go the hole length that way you know it’s not coming off. Don’t go putting it on to thick or you’ll get it oozing.

The curve of my chrome trims on the front don't quite match the curve of the bodywork, it isn't much but it sprang when using silicone. I reverted to the clips but fixed gator tape to the bodywork flanges where the clips matched. all seems ok.

                    Hi Paul

See this post for more discussion on the merit of using sealant (and what type to get). https://socforum.com/forum/forum/sta...e-badge-insert

                    Cheers

                      That was my problem too.

The clips have failed on my rear trim and it kept falling off so I’ve removed the clips and reattached both it and one of the horseshoes with Evostick One for All crystal - about 6 blobs along the length; the trim pushed in and then held in place overnight with masking tape. It seems rock solid and I’ll squirt some Dynax down the back of it.
