Rover v8. Need advice on fitment

hi all I have a 1976 stag original engine shot. I have a bought a rover v8 3.5 from a 1976 Range Rover. I’m just wondering what engine mounts to use? And also what do I need to fit the rover v8 to the exsisting original stag auto gearbox.

Any help would be greatly apprieciated.

    Many thanks!

Also what starter motor will be better for it. Should I use the stag one or get a rover v8 one .?

You used to be able to get the bits from Monarch Stag, not sure as to the situation with them now as it keeps getting sold.

youve need modified engine mounts, and chassis lowering spacers so the engine doesnt sit to high, your also need to change the front springs as the rover engine is lighter, starter use the rover

you will need to make up mountings to suit but, in my case they fit to the existing Stag mounting points easily enough.

My engine, currently a 3.9 Efi, is fitted without any spacer between the chassis and cross member and has a clearance of about 20mm between the plenum and the unmodified bonnet. The 3.5 with weber carb I had originally fitted without a bonnet bulge if the pancake filter was dished down over the carb slightly. This didn't adversely affect performance. The thing you need to watch out for is the engine landing on the steering rack pipework, that determines the height you place the engine at. I currently use a Corsa rack with electric power steering on the column so I can't show you like for like, but I had no spacer when the Stag rack was used..

The gray spacer you see in the mounting was used to centre the engine

Finding a bellhousing to fit the gearbox to the engine may be tricky, I used an LT77 manual box with the 3.5 but have gone for a T5 box now.. I still have the LT77 box, cross member and propshaft. If you're interested PM me.

The flywheel and clutch from the 4wd RR 3.5 unit might be a meatier set up than 2wd Rover engines and may foul the bellhousing you ultimately use. My 3.9 came out of a discovery and had the 4x4 flywheel / clutch assembly, I swapped them for the items off my old 3.5 to overcome this. Simmilarly the starter which came with the 3.9 was large and chunky and wouldn't fit so I reverted to the one off the 3.5.

Further to previous, you need to consider how you are going to mount your alternator and power steering pump. Daves suggestion of looking at Monarchs website is a good one, I bought modified front springs and exhaust headers from them, although I made up my own brackets for the alternator and pump.

For your information, the height to the top of my plenum chamber (air box) from a line taken from rocker cover to rocker cover is in the order of 135mm. If you measure the height of your assembled carbs and filters this may help you decide how to go in that direction. If you want to use SU carbs one option is to source MGB V8 carbs and manifold as in that setup the carbs were placed at the rear of the engine.

Other carb options include Eddlebrock (weber equivalent) or Holley items, and a machine shop should be able to shave off the existing carb mountings from your inlet manifold and graft on a mounting plate to suit what you opt for.

There are a lot of things to consider and do when you convert to an RV8, but it is a cheaper option than a total rebuild on a TV8 and you gain with a strong engine with different torque and power characteristics without the drama of the TV8 weaknesses.

It has to be said you also loose the authenticity of having a 'proper' car with an associated loss in value, all of which is subjective depending on the prospective buyer. Having had a Stag in the '70's I was never going to buy one with a TV8 but I have strong admiration for those that have, of whom there are many.

PS, you would also loose the TV8 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang burbble, but the RV8 rumble is also nice to hear.
