    Driveshaft mix and match?

    One of my driveshafts has the plug missing, the one that keeps the grease in and the dirt out of the splines. I have a pair of spares so I can just swap the plugs? is that possible?

    Would it be better to just swap the inner shafts? I would normally worry about the wear being different on them..

    The plug is a push fit I believe.

    With regards to mixing and matching shafts,yes that is possible as I did myself 10 years ago. However, use common sense when checking if the proposed pair fit together. Are they too tight or too slack on the splines? If the answer is "no" to both those questions then you should be fine.

      Ok, kinda what I thought.. I do remember from my TR days a suggestion to swap the driveshafts complete left to right to swap the “thrust” sides of the splines, always wondered if that helps.

      in the interest of science I popped the cap out of the other spare and it is not a simple cap, it’s a domed type plug which is sitting in a groove. When it was installed it was hit from the rear which spreads it into the groove, making it secure.

      I was able to refit it by placing it in a socket and bashing the Centre with a ball pein to “ re-dome” it a bit more so that I could get it all the way down into the grooved area. With the uj there I couldn’t just hit it so attacked it from 4 angles with a brass drift. It tightened down nicely and seems secure but its not pretty!
