Any Diff inspection tips please?

Hi all,

Sorry I haven’t been on the form much lately – you know how things get sometimes!!

My transmission has a slight whine at a constant speed, but slightly more on the over run. I’m guessing this is the diff. I have found one for sale that the owner bought as a goon ‘un and includes the extension. However he never fitted it so can’t confirm this, other than it has had a new cover gasket fitted, but that could be for any reason.
So, I have decided it’s worth a punt. Can you fine folk give me a few inspection pointers please?

I’ve searched the forum and am I’m thinking along the following lines:

1. Little or no backlash – mine has a reasonable amount which I am sure is responsible for the clunk I get when I initially move the car either in reverse or forwards and changing gear a tad.
2. No corrosion anywhere internally
3. No untoward noises of any kind
4. No slop in any of the output shafts
5. Seals should look OK (mind you I’ve never seen one before. Now I mention it, I’ve never even touched a diff before either!)

If there is anything I’ve missed, I would be grateful for more pointers

Here a article that I found some time ago written by Don Kennedy, it covers most thing related to the diff, I used it when overhauling the planet and sun gears on mine, hope this helps.
