Further Stromberg carbs float chamber question?

The missing vacuum elbow arrived from Paddocks today, so I fitted it and put everything back together again, and the car started fine, but the right hand float chamber started leaking fuel again, despite it having been serviced with new valves/gaskets etc., so I am back to square one. However I am not sure I put the floats back the right way round.
The Rimmers manual shows the floats with the "stepped" part showing (page 31), whereas the carb manual that both Mallardstag and DJT provided a reference to, shows the "flat" part showing!?
    Which one is right?
I have got the carbs off again and can't really see anything wrong, unless I have put the floats back upside down?

Thanks Chris, that ties in with the Rimmer Bros pic, and the carb manual pic I think I was looking at the wrong way round.
Anyway took off and put back the right hand float chamber, reconnected everything and it is not now leaking fuel.

I did replace the jubilee clips that hold the fuel pipes to the two carbs, and it could well have been that the RH old one was not tightening up properly, allowing some fuel to escape and it was running round the float chamber making it appear that was where the leak was, when it wasn't.

Just need to take the car on a run, and when the Synchrometer arrives that I have ordered, can have a go at properly balancing them, although the tickover appears much better at present and at around 750/800rpm when the engine is warm, which is what it should be

Glad you got there in the end and your perseverance was rewarded, makes it just that bit more sweet when you've had a bit of a nightmare with it.
PS La Gomera looks a nice place, enjoyed the tour.
        Thank's Chris.

We got back from Gomera yesterday, having been there because the Brother-in-Law wanted to see another Canary Island prior to celebrating his 65th Birthday (today), with a meal out, and will be accompanied by my daughter, her husband, and two of our grandchildren who arrived last night. Probably won't be in a fit state to drive the Stag tomorrow, and anyway Saturday is Snooker day.

I went through the same process. I took a photo of it before dismantling, I could find it to post it

No need to, I am keeping my fingers crossed that the problem is now sorted.
I have had my Stag for 25 years now, but it still keeps surprising me on occasions, or maybe that I am just getting too old.
I am in two minds whether or not to drive it to my Snooker match tomorrow, or use the wife's Honda.

My wife was most upset when I brought the Carbs inside the house, she said the smell of petrol was giving her a headache and went to bed.
Being a good husband I quickly cleaned them and put them back on the car, and this time she started without pouring petrol out of the float chambers.

If not tomorrow, then on Sunday I will take the Stag on a run to see how she performs.
Living in Tenerife means it always takes some time for parts to arrive here, and once the Synchrometer I have ordered arrives, I will have a go at balancing the carbs properly.

Have also ordered some touch up paint locally, as other drivers are always scratching my car in the car park, as they don't seem to care as much about cars as do British owners.

                I thought I had solved my Carb problem - but I haven't.
Had the family over for a week so never touched the Stag till yesterday when I tried to start it - but it wouldn't and it was obvious it was a fuel problem, as when I squirted a little fuel into the carbs today she started straight away. Took the Stag on a run and no problems, and when I got back would re-start fine (but of course the engine was warm by now).

Going to see if she will start in the morning when cold, and if not I am going to have to read up on "cold starting problems* on here. The fuel pump is definately pumping fuel O.K., it is as though there is no fuel available to fire her up when starting from cold. The choke on both carbs is operating O.K., and there are no leaks from the carbs, so it is a bit of a mystery at the moment. Never had a problem starting before, only since I put the carbs back together after fitting the Stromberg "service" parts.

Wouldn't start again today. As usual turning over o.k., but obviously not having any fuel available, and I have to squirt a little fuel through the carb elbows to get her to fire.
Would welcome suggestions as to what it might be.
As I said in my previous post, once started it runs fine and will re-start again if I turn it off and on again. It is as though it is not sucking any fuel into the mixing chamber when first switching on and the engine is cold. Yesterday I did check that the 2 carb cylinders were lifting and dropping as they should do, and they are, and the 2 choke cables are also operating the choke mechanism o.k., and I can't see anything trapped. The local mechanic I usually turn to when I have a problem I can't fix is away at present, so there is no-one else I can ask at the moment.

                    Hi Terry,

I see you never had this problem before the carbs were serviced recently. Are you absolutly certain they were put back together correctly with the correct settings and all that?

I’m no carb expert by any stretch, but if you can’t get it figured out with ”normal” tweeking and tuning perhaps you need to try and reassemble them again making sure everything goes together correctly?

                    Cheers,
                    Joakim

That does really sound like a problem with the choke setup. The left-hand carb fuel enrichment disc could be stuck, it sounds like that if the engine runs properly when hot.

Logic does suggest that it is not getting the enriched supply that the choke should provide; perhaps something not assembled correctly in the choke mechanism? Or something blocking one of the ports of the choke? Perhaps a little test - when you do get it running and warmed up, does it run roughly if you operate the choke? It should do if the choke is working.

If you dismantled the choke assemblies I believe it is possible to refit them with the disk 180 degrees out so that the small holes are in the wrong position. It's been a while since I stripped mine down but I'm sure that's why I took this photo.
