    Thanks again all.
Despite what some say, the support on the forum, for people like me who have little knowledge of all things Stag, is truly brilliant and appreciated
With the car ticking over just put red lead of the multi meter to battery positive and black lead to negative terminal and see what the voltage is, this should be the output from the alternator. If you can hold the leads on and Rev it a little the voltage should increase but no more than 15 vollts. This may sound a little nanny state bet wear some safety glasses because batteries like to explode unexpectedly!

Thanks for all the responses to this issue, and interested to see others are having similar problems. I will try checking alternator voltage at battery in the weekend and work back from there through earth straps to see if any improvements.
