Ultra sonic cleaning or other options

    Hi All

I am about to start re-building several Stag engines that I have had for many years. If I dont do it soon they will never get done..

I want to clean all the parts including heads and pistons so that they come up as new.In the past I have had parts sandblasted but it is messy and I was looking to invest in a hobby ultrasonic cleaner to do the job.
I tried a very small unit with a piston in it(only just big enough)it wasnt heated and I used water and vinegar as the cleaning agent.
    It was next to useless..

Does anyone have any experience of a larger heated machine,or is it back to blasting..Vapour blast machines are too expensive for my use..

Any ideas as Im going round and round in circles..

    Thanks

    Sam

The hobby ones are useless. We have a Chinese one at work that I bought on eBay, it is just large enough to fit a trumpet in and has a heater.
So far I have used it to clean several Stag engine parts, it seems especially good for small castings like oil pumps, I have also done a couple of dismantled diffs. I use dishwasher tablets in it.

in the past I have used the dishwasher..ok if you don't get caught...but was also found out a week later with a bsa c15 cylinder head in the oven and valve guides in the freezer...some women just don't understand.

Dishwasher works well for some parts, I’ve just done all the stalks and wiring from the steering column, came out like new. The crockery didn’t suffer either! The ultrasonic does a better job with parts that have deeply engrained dirt though because it helps to loosen it.

If you volunteer to load the dishwasher, you can hide some parts under saucepans etc. Just don't forget to volunteer to unload it...............
