A lot of classic car clubs have started promoting their cars toward younger enthusiasts - clubs such as the Morris Minor Owners Club, the TR Register and even the Vintage Sports Car Club. Even the Rover Sports Register, long seen as fuddy-duddy, is attracting younger enthusiasts. Realistically, it's the only way to ensure that these cars survive long term and that desirability is maintained, to ensure that younger generations pick up the passion for these cars that has always been there.
The Stag is often perceived as an "old man's car" - largely because it's a big soft V8 GT rather than something small or sporty. But there are plenty of us out there who are younger and who own Stags - a quick forum flick suggests we have club members as young as 15, there are some of us in our twenties and some in their early thirties. There's potential here for a young members' register, be it for owners under 30 or under 35, which could help raise the profile of the car within a younger demographic.
Would it be worth establishing a formalised "Young Members' Register" within the Stag Owners Club? I'm thinking along the lines of discounted membership, possibly a page in the mag, additional "Young Member" stands at shows, building bridges with other young classic car registers in order to spread the word about the Stag among those who might not have considered them before? I'm not thinking we should reinvent the wheel, but if it didn't work for the other clubs they wouldn't be doing it either.
A secondary advantage is that with social media use more prevalent among the young, any activity here could boost our presence on social media.
