    SOCTFL Door skins

Having spent £160 per door skin I would’ve hoped they’d be goood. The Guy who is fitting them isn’t impressed. He has put one on the door and says the bottom of it below the sewage line looks like corrugated tin! He’s got to DA it with 80 grit then high buld primer. He says I could’ve saved my self some money and bought pattern ones!!!

I await the response telling me off now for questioning SOCTFL products!

Called in to see Kev, Mike and co. when I saw your car there. Wanted to check how good a job they were doing, but you’d only just dropped it off. Told them to give me a call when it’s done and to practice hard on yours, they should then be able to get it right next time, I.e. if/when they do mine.

Disappointed to hear their view on the skins, you haven’t been storing them anywhere precarious have you (under the mattress with your money).

Hi Ian. Nope, they’ve been in the shed stored safely. You know what Kev and Mike are like, they are pros after all. Kevs going to work hard to get good door gaps all around on the drivers side, this is the side which had a brand new heritage wing and the wing doesn’t follow the door, or the other way around. Still, the wing was cheap at £350!

Theyre not in a rush to get it done as I’m in no rush to have it back, I’m in Glasgow next week then Holland for 2 weeks!

Not sure why you think SOCTFL wouldn’t want feedback? It’s only carburettor threads that descend into chaos it seems.

Just a reminder that soctfl funds the parts rather than producing them but even so I’m interested to follow up. Did they take any pictures of the skin? Where did you buy them from and were they def SOCTFL one’s (did they have the tick) - got to ask

I’ll pm you my email address and I can follow Up with the fabricators.

I remember this thread from the days when I was getting ready to fit the SOCTFL door skins.

Forum for members of the SOC. This is for technical matters and general Stag discussion

On mine I had to "fettle" the handle opening. The rest was ok but the top front curved edge needed serious work to align with the front wing. This didn't seem to be a problem with the door skin however, as the door shell itself didn't follow the contour.

On my White/Blue Stag thread (post 80 onwards) I recall that the left and right door skins are different sizes, but thos different sizes exactly matched the original skins!

                Hi Paul,

just out of curiosity, can you tell me if the rear wings are SOCTFL? Mine came - like the door skins - from EJW and I swear they had the same finger prints and peen pattern and used the steel from the same roll as the door skins. One of those rear wings simply didn't have the curve on the B pillar section - looked like the fitter had a coffee break and forgot that tht bit hadn't been through the roller when he got back from coffee!

Hi Paul, yes I know SOCTFL don’t make the skins just fund them. I didn’t take any photos. They are definitely SOCTFL parts bought from paddocks. They were around £160 each so 2 1/2 times the cost of pattern ones. The alignment to the top curve of the wing is awful, that may be the wing too, this was fitted 4 years ago and is a BMH wing at a cost of £350,

i know our cars are old and have been messed with over the years but I did really hope for better, unless of course I’m naive! We will see what the left door skin is like.

I think the guy was more surprised about the corrugated effect on the door where he says it’s roller marks. I thought the doors were pressed?

mayb I can add to the confusion.

My stag I restored back in 2008

                    two soctfl door skins

passenger side is a beautiful fit

                    DSCN2239.JPG

drivers side I think displays the issue you are currently experiencing
                    DSCN2242.JPG

my passenger front wing is factory fit to the best of my knowledge. certainly looks like it anyway

my drivers wing I know was replaced after the 1987 Hurricane as a wall was blown down across the front o/s corner.

after a shed load of head scratching and measuring we came to the conclusion that the drivers side door fit was because of the front wing. the door skin edges are an exact mirror profile of each other.

If I were you I would take it up with the front wing supplier

I'll do some investigating-just to say I put a new driver's side wing on one of my projects about 4 years ago and it was a dreadful fit. We have tried to discuss it with BMH but the politics involved make it trick to make progress

A lot of these skins have been fitted and this is the first time i have seen a problem so worth a little digging

Could it be that the BMH wing tooling is now rather old and the fault could be with the wings and not the skins? This is a similar photo of mine during restoration in 2013 with new BMH wing and SOCTFL door skin.

I had to work on both original front wing and SOCTFL door skin to get them to like one another...

Drew, I'm not sure of which rear wings you speak. SOCTFL funded rear wings haven't been available for some time (lots of years I believe). If you let me have a bit more info I can try and give you some better feedback

                            Cheers

                              Hi Paul,

they came from EJW and were called (precisely) LH (or RH) 3/4 Rear Repair Panel. They were in steel natura (no primer) which didn't rust. £85 each in 2010.

I'm guessing that, even if they were not SOCTFL panels, they were done by the same company. The steel and finish were just too similar to be otherwise IMHO
