    New carpets to fit

Gent's shortly going to embark on full carpet replacement, any tips on removing the interior. And is this a bitch of a job. Have new carpets lying boxed and ready from Aldridge trimmers

Any advise would be much appreciated

Well you will have to remove the seats, goes without saying, also the seat belts only at the bottom, parcel shelf, also the bottom of the B posts, should get away with just loosing it, same with the centre consul just unscrew so you can ease the carpet underneath, the rear ashtray/ seat belt unit just unscrews but pull back towards the rear of the car as there is a blind bracket that it slots into, covering this is the worst job.

Hope this is of some help

Please keep it coming guys, this has set me to thinking about new carpets. I would have thought the console had to come out ?that's a bit daunting when you think about all the wiring. Martin.

            Hi Martin,

No the Console can been left there but you will have to release it so you can feed the carpet under. if I remember it was just two Phillips screws under the coin tray.

Its easy , lift out the wood round the gear lever , The bit under theash tray should come out first , disconnect the choke cable and wiring , canr remember if the concol wiring is part of the loom or has a join under the dash , remove foot well lamps and wiring and parcel shelf mounts and the consol bolts slide it out carefully and your away, The seat bolts should come outok as i dont think they go through the floor , watch for the little spacers under the runners, The rest of the trim is just screws youll work it out. Good luck.

I hate to disagree but I did not have to go to all that trouble around the console, but as said above your work it out, it is only time consuming not hard work, If you layout the centre carpet you will see that it does not cover, the whole tunnel under the console, and flaps under the heater.

The centre console doesn't have a great deal of wiring! All the wiring stays attached to the backs of the switches. Prise out the coin tray via the plastic black strip (I used a plastic spatula type thingy) push the gear stick part forward, this is clipped into the rear of the console. Take off the gearstick handle, the gaiter is fastened underneath the wood so doeasn't have to be un done. Remove the gearstick piece of wood to reveal 2 screws which fix the consol to the transmission tunnel. 1 srew either side of the console to the dashboard. Remove the fronts of the switches via the chrome fixings. Remove the radio so you can pull the switches backwards, then remove the console. This sounds long winded but it's quite straight forward. I've replaced my console and woodwork, not too difficult!

As Steve (Sjm) says, you do not have to remove the centre consul or the b posts to fit the carpet, just release them enough to get the new carpet under. the only major items to remove are the seats, the weight of the seats will tell you why the car gives such little MPG. one original stag seat weighs more than two modern recaro's.
