    Upholstery advice please

My seats need some attention but like all things in life, I'm on a budget.
Having looked at them again, the vinyl covers aren't actually in bad condition, it is the foam that has lost its firmness and gone thin.
The drivers seat has a couple of tears and a split where the nylon piping is showing.
Here's where I need some advice.
Can I get the tears in the vinyl seat cover repaired and then put new foam in or will I regret not saving up for new seat covers?
How hard is it to replace the foam yourself, there is a video on Youtube?!
    All thoughts welcomed!

You could take the vinyl covers off to get them repaired, but it would probably be dearer than buying a new cover, the foams are easy enough to change yourself, one thing I do is double cover the metal hinges part of the seat, the cover always splits, where the bolt holds the two parts of the seat together
