Having just removed my steering rack, it is not the easiest of jobs trust me and I am convinced that there is more steering fluid in the system than gas in the tank!!. I drained my system and turned the wheel from R-L-R again and even two days later I still got bombed on with drips.Tie rod ends were not the easiest to get out, that is until a friend loaned me a air operated shock gun and still the RHS had to be encouraged with a little heat.
The hose connectors again were not the easiest to disconnect as the threads were 1 inch or so long and in the tightest of spots. To finally get the rack to come down I had to resort to removing the LHS exhaust pipe at the manifold, so I fully understand your once and for all comment.

I took my rack to the same friend who loaned me his shock gun to rebuild, as he has a machine shop, using the rebuild kit from Rimmers. He did notice some wear down one side of the RHS shaft, but said that could be redone the same way that crankshafts are redone.sprayed with metal, then machined back to the original diameter.. I am sure that in the UK you can obtain a rebuilt one, but adding on shipping overseas both ways made me decide to go my route as I trust Peter, who completely rebuilt my engine back to manufactured specs, including my crank.

As I live in frigid Canada we are leaving for the warm south for two months so will leave the job of re installing the rack until we return in mid March and warmer times here.

Terry, try LD parts. In my first four years of Stag ownership I think I fitted 3 racks, and within, or typically just outside 12 months of fitting, they all developed a leak. I finally bought one from LD parts and I’ve not changed it since. Hope I’m not tempting fate here!
