    overheating ?or not?

Hi can any one please help . I went to watch my grandson play football today on the way (only one mile down the road )I noticed that the dreaded temperature gauge was just in the red .(usually sits dead centre no matter what )I stopped immediately opened the bonnet and felt the rad it was barely warm I then removed the top from the expansion bottle and it was still full of water and the water was cold do you think it’s the water pump ?

:dude:hi jamcarr2, was the top hose warm, if it was, the rad should alsohave been hot. being that the water is not being pumped around, { if the pump is not working} did you check them, what about the bottom hose, was that cold, if it was it could point to the thermostat not opening and not allowing the water to flow. but it could also be a electrical problem ,a fault y sender. i would start the car up again , watch the gauge ,and feel the hoses , also look in the rads neck , if the pump is going you will see thewater moving gats

      John,

Was there any unusual noises, smells (excess heat)?. When you removed the pressure cap did you get excess pressure release??? if the answer to any of these is NO then it may be a defective temp sensor on the engine, or a faultytemp gauge.I suggest you change the sensorand retry.

Ifyou had excessive heat, noises or smells then check to see if your top radiator hoseiscool compared with other coolant hoses, if this is the case you could have athermostat which is stuck closed! Don't discount a faulty water pump either, a flow check should cofirm this.

Furthermore have you recently put antifree in? if so you may have an airlock in the system!!

Tried to rectify the alleged over heating problem today, first changed the thermostat still the same, then changed the sender unit ,still the same so by this time I was convinced it must be the water pump .I was just putting it back in the garage until tomorrow when suddenly the petrol gauge dropped from ¾ to just under ½ and the temperature gauge returned to the centre position where it should be .I guess this must be a faulty regulator .does anyone know where exactly it is situated

          Hi jamcarr

You'll find it on the back of the speedo.A few of us have fitted solid state ones which work well.

Now there’s a thing ! I don’t know if you remember but about two months ago I asked if anyone new why my speed was erratic ,got several replies but none did the trick so I got one of e-bay .I fitted it Sunday morning just before going out on that run .

Thanks so much for all the help without the forum it would have taken weeks to work that out

            thanks again john
