    cams

anyone know of a supplier of fast road cams for the stag?

I'd try Faversham Classics they used to advertise fast road cams for the Stag.
Piper Cams used to list the Stag many years ago, also worth a try.
I've Holbay fast road cams in mine, but they are no longer Holbay Engineering but Coltec Racing Engines these days.
Mine were ground in the early 90's, the gentleman who did all their cam grinding having retired years ago!

      Faversham still do them.

I have 3 engines fitted with Faversham cams, you have to send your cams to them and they send them off for re-profiling. They are actually a Kent profile with 285 degrees duration

If your heads are well skimmed and you are using standard thickness gaskets as I am to get the compression ratio up, you will need to make cut outs in the piston crowns for the inlet valves.

This sounds daunting but is easily done with a TR7 inlet valve slightly reduced in diameter that has teeth cut into its outer edge. There will be some pictures somewhere in the Pushing the limits thread, and also the Flying farmers new project thread.
Both of these threads are rather long and I can't remember where in the threads the pictures occur, but they are in there somewhere!

Would it be fair to say that cams alone are pretty pointless unless you sort out inlet and exhaust manifolds? or are there some gains to be had there?

Cams are usually the last thing to change after everything else has been done.

I have never seen any dyno figures for an otherwise standard Stag engine apart from a cam change, but I wouldn't put money on it being better than standard overall, I would hazard a guess at bottom end losses and a tiny bit of top end gain.
