Cylinder head suggestion from a former Stag owner

Has anyone done this to their heads to reduce tappet noise?

Whilst your heads are off, I would recommend that you grind off the

half-moon shaped machining marks (where present) on the inner head

casting, just below each tappet bore. These marks are made by the tappet

bore machining tool and have same diameter as the tappet bore, otherwise

the marks are above the valve spring machined seat. By doing this, you

will eliminate the cold engine tappet ticking noise ang have generally

    quieter tappets.

I have been rebuilding Stag engines for well over fourty years, i'm just a glutton for punishment, and have never had to do this, tappet noise is not something you get on a Stag engine, loose valve guides will tick on a cold engine, when the engine warm up and everything expands the tapping goes away, worn tappet buckets can also be noisy.

Over the years I have had enthusiastic diy mechanics tell me about the modifications they have made to there engines and now it's great, I always ask what else have you done to the engine, the answer is always, I rebuilt the engine including the modifications, so was it the modifications or the fact you rebuilt the engine that it runs as it should.
