    Sump advice

    Hi

I found a second hand sump at the Triumph day at Stoneleigh a couple of weeks ago. A few dents and surface rust but otherwise fine
The advice I seek is regarding paint. Once I have removed the surface rust I want to give it a coat of paint before fitting. What type of paint would you recommend for both inside ande out

    Thanks in advance

    Paul,

I don't think you should paint the inside of the sump as the paint could come off and affect the oil ways. The outside could be painted with engine paint.

+1 with NOT painting the engine inside, it's not going to rust is it !
There are questions now about restricting heat transference by painting the inside of engine blocks, it's difficult to find a paint with as good heat transference as bare metal, and the cleanliness required to ensure a perfect grab of the paint on the insides is difficult to achieve.

POR15 for the outside, remarkable stuff.

Thanks chaps - you confirmed my own thoughts. There was an off-chance that someone had a reason/product for sealing the inside metal surface of the sump. Castrol is probably as good as anything.

Valvoline VR1 is even better in my opinion. I have always found it gives better oil pressure.

This stuff is often used to paint the internal block faces: https://www.frost.co.uk/glyptal-red-...BoCFZQQAvD_BwE

No reason why, with proper surface prep, it could not be used for the inside of the sump, but I can't really see why it would be needed.
