    Fuel low light

    Hello Staggers,

My low fuel light seems to becoming on more frequently and when there is more fuel left than previously,in other words flashing prematurely.

I know this works from the sender unit in top of tank,

1st Question,Is there any adjustment to the float or mechanism in any way.(I know it can be caused by fuel sloshing around in the tank(no baffles),but why has it got worse ,the light?

2nd,seem to remember on a post saying that a member printed something in the magazine regarding a device that controlled/made the fuel warning light more stable, but cant find this, does any one have the details of the person or product and how to fit?

Many thanks,(Stag will be perfect one day !)

    Hi Mark

If you mean that your fuel light flicks on and off when fuel is sloshing around the device you mentioned will cure the problem, I fitted one about 18 months ago, it is basically a delay unit which is wired in behind the dash, I think the guy who makes them up is called Tom Mainland, I noticed he was advertising in the mag recently (in the classifieds)the unit is about 20.00 IIRC . It comes with full instructions to fit and takes about 20 mins.

if you dont have a mag I will try and find his details when I get a moment.

    good luck

Mick,Hello, yes thats the one,to stop light flickering on and off when fuel sloshing around.

Was it easy to fit?,and does it work well,?does it stop the light flashing all together?

Yes can you please dig out his details for me,I dont have the Mag.

This would be really appreciated, and am sure would help others with this annoying problem(not very often I can afford to fill her up to the brim thus avoiding the flashing.

        Thanks again,

        Kind Regards,

        Mark

          Hello Andrew

Yes I am keeping well and the car is fine thank you.

Mark I have managed to find the details in the August 2009 mag although I am sure that it has been in more recently, the ad reads -

Warning Light, stop the spurious flashing with my easy to fit device, fits mk 1 and mk2 25.00 Tel 01142663309 or email tandb.mainland@btinternet.com

It is a peice of cake to fit and works a treat.

          Good luck

Hello,Staggers,I need to bounce this back to the top as I am having difficulty making contact with the chap who makes the device to stop the low fuel light flickering prematurely.

I believe he is located in the Orkney Isles,Mickl has kindly dug out the copy of the mag with details but tel number appears to be incorrect.

                Any HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED,

                REGARDS MARK

The guy in sheffield (in the mag) who sells them for £25 is on 0114 266 3309. I intend to get one also, as mine starts flashing at just under half a tank!
                      cheers,

I do not know how that particular unit works but I made one years ago using a 555 timer chip. These chips are about 50p and used to teach basic electronics. With the addition of a resistor and capacitor to act as a timing circuit and a couple of decouplers and a piece of vero board it is a simple circuit.
I will make myself one oneday , after the dash repeater for the indicators, oh and reasembling number one Stag.

                            Hi Al,
My understanding is that this unit senses the difference between a slosh around in the tank, and a genuine low fuel level, by employing a time delay before lighting up the warning light - as a slosh around obviously settles quite quickly.. I believe that if there were baffles in the tank, it wouldn't be a problem.
                            cheers,
                            Peter
