Many thanks for the info. Andy, especially noted about the speaker cables and the grille lugs - couple of loops of double sided tape should do it. Will investigate power from the cigarette lighter socket, and have a neat wee fuse holder to go in-line.... either that or I'll run a wire up to the back of the fusebox….time to consult the Maint. manual & get the multimeter out !
    Again, many thanks.

No one is telling me to keep it looking original. It is my choice although it does have a number of modifications. These however are not easily or not at all seen. Electronic ignition, electronic fuel pump, electric fan, polybushes and LED instrument panel lights. Despite not having major modifications I do use and enjoy it.

No Stags left the production line with radios in them. They were all a 'dealer-fit' option. Many were fitted with 8-track units, hence the large opening. So 'originality' is dependant on what the original owner specified when it was ordered/delivered. Changing the I.C.E. unit is no real difference to changing the tyres. Fit what works at the time; a future owner can revert to 'originality' if they wish, but in the meantime I'd fit something that fulfils my listening requirements. Just my opinion........ [/QUOTE

Tyres are wearing items that are regularly replaced. A radio is not.

Oh, I don’t know. In the 10 years I’ve had this Stag I’ve changed the tyres twice and the I.C.E. unit 3 times.........

            Your welcome Ian.

Post a picture when you’re finished. Always like to see pictures of what people have accomplished.

I enjoyed fitting an upgraded old style radio and I think it’s great that they have a new lease of life.

I saw on eBay that someone is selling what I used to fit a spindle type radio.

Mine was NOS from Halfords and enabled me to easily overcome the issue of where the car now had a din e size slot. I paid a lot less that that as well.

So the I.C.E does not look original which is what I want.

Probably a (lack of) BL QA - when I fitted a Retrosound dual cone speaker, I needed to introduce packing between the heater metalwork and the speaker magnet as it was a loose fit. Found the high density "foam" used to present a tablet case in its retail pack just the job. Firm, just the right thickness and waxy, so relatively easy to stuff into position and ensures no unwanted vibrations.

Classic Car Stereo do a DAB/FM and Bluetoth unit that looks like a 1970's radio. They also do a sterio speaker that fits petfectly in the dashboard speaker mounting already in our stags. I fitted one in mine last year and it looks good and sounds great. https://www.classiccarstereo.co.uk/
It was James Bond's colour... Saffron Yellow is so cool :-)

                    That stereo looks quite tempting.

Can anyone recommend the power output of the stereo most seem to be 4 x 50 watts peak which is about 4 x 22 watts RMS. is that sufficient with the top down? I have seen Sony and Pioneer do a 4 x 100 watt peak Power which is 4 x 45 watts rms. Thanks In Advance

Where do you get original brake pads / disc pads and how do you deal with the asbestos dust?

The sheer volume and range of external sounds you will get with the roof down, exhausts, tyres, other vehicles will ruin any quality of sound you will hear, Other road users and neighbours will not appreciate a high volume mobile disco, they will have a word for that type of a road user, and it won't be a nice word.

The Stag is quite difficult to find cubby holes for speakers which results in speakers not being sited in the optimum positions for good surround sound. Many low power radios do not amplify well at the higher end of their power output. You have suggested Sony and Pioneer which are good mid-range manufacturers I have an older Sony DAB radio and I find in more than capable though I tend to drive the Stag with the radio on only at lower speeds in town.

Before you purchase a radio check the depth the radio needs with leads fitted as the depth available is limited on the Stag.

My TR6 has a very nice radio unfortunately loud as it is it is only audible over the raucous exhausts when the car is parked.

Many convertible car manufacturers have overcome the problem by incorporating speakers into the seat headrests, some have incorporated noise-cancelling functionality into the speakers to enhance the sound quality.

So my advise would be to temper your budget to what is actually obtainable, it would be very easy to spend hundreds to no avail. If you are really into music perhaps consider a radio with bluetooth transmitter and bluetooth headphones.

                              Hi Danny,

I had one before my current stereo. All worked and it fitted well.

However, it doesn’t look great and had slightly annoying whine when using Bluetooth. To be fair I didn’t try tracking down source of interference to determine if stereo or car was at fault. So it could be a simple case of fitting a suppressor.
