    Removing Water Pump

I read somewhere in the forum that someone was having problems getting the pump out.

The method I used was to undo and removethe LH bolt, then fit a home made bracket under the head. The bracket links the bolt to a slide or pullhammer, and is just a strip of sheet steel with three holes in it. One central hole is for the bolt, and the other two are at the ends of the strip, and overlap to form a loop, give strength and centralise the force.

Hi VMad - looking at yr picture the body that the water pump comes out of under the lip we have leaking water have removed the water pump and it needs to be refurbed the o ring are not good - if the o rings are letting water up and passed the water is escaping from under the actual body does that sound correct - once the pump is out you pass feeler gauge or something slim right thro the body its like a breather slot/hole? I take it when the pump is seated back with new o rings this hole will be sealed by the body of the pump ? does this sound right - cheers steve

      Hi Steve.

There is a vent or hole in the block where water or oil can escape if the seals fail. This provides a visual warning and prevents water and oil mixing in the engine.

If this is where coolant is escaping then the pump seal has failed, butif it is coming out of the cover insteadthen it just a gasket leak.

After you have fitted the new pump, before you refit the pump cover, measure the gap between cover and block (no gasket)with a feeler gauge and select the right thickness of gasket as per instruction in the manual. This will make sure you get the right impeller (blades)clearance so your pump circulates water effectively andthere is adequate clearance between impeller and cover.

        Hi Chris

        thanks -

seems the seals are passed the best no leak from water pump cover gaskets - have removed water pump and will send it away for refurb any idea who is best for the refurb (it is a 6vane pump) thanks Steve

Or do it yourself and speak to Peter at ldparts about machining the impellor and fitting a ceramic seal:

It is often better to rebuild a known good pump than to fit whatcould be aninsufficiently hardened new one.
