In short no. As Bruce says fill in the change of details section on the V5C and send it off. They will update the details and reissue the V5C. No different from a change of address or registered keeper and no "evidence" of the change,. I assume staggards car was already known to the tenerife authorities, hence why it had to stay blue.

I need to get mine done sometime as it says "auto" but was converted to manual about 20 years ago by the previous owner. I have notified the insurance though just in case.

One peculiarity of Tenerife (and the whole of Spain), is that when something is first registered (Car, Property, Complex, etc.), it's colour is registered too, and that colour has to remain throughout it's life (*or so I am led to believe). I know that the apartments that we live in and own can only be re-painted the same colour, the same colour (on the outside) as all other apartments on our complex, in our case "biege", but the inside can be whatever colour you like.

When Graham (Staggard) first imported his Stag it was registered as a (French) Blue model I believe, so it had to stay "Blue" when he had it re-sprayed. I don't know but I assume it just said Blue code ?? on the log book, and as long as it remained a shade of blue that was acceptable. When Stag owner Ian Charlesworth imported his Stag here he owned 2 Stags back in Yorkshire, a red one with a Rover engine, and a white one with the original Triumph engine. and that was the only one that he was legally allowed to Import.

However don't take my word as gospel. as the Law changes quite frequently here, rather like the exchange rate.

Message from Graham who’s no longer a member but wants incorrect assumptions corrected:
“My car is blue because I wanted it to be blue not because it had to be. If I wanted to change the colour you just change it on the car docs as you would in the UK. Also my house has changed colour 3 times in my ownership there is nothing in my deeds to say what colour it has to be. That would be stupid. X pats talk to Xpats and make up their own stories. If his complex has to be painted the same colour it will be be in the constitution of community”.

Thanks for all feedback on my post. I appreciate the input. Have decided its getting resprayed brown. As someone stated I have a piece of motoring history also as I look at pictures of stags the brown does grow on you and it feels really seventies . Going to watch rush again. By the way I have removed the engine. Just for the record you can do it without removing the gearbox . I was told this was impossible .

My car is the same colour as your as is in the process of being restored. The car has just come back from the shot blasters and I will have to make a decision on colour soon. I have grown to like the colour of the car and think a well painted one looks very good. That said I think I will probably change the colour. I have four colours on the list, Damson, Magenta, Malard and White. Damson and especially Malard make the car look very classy in my view. Magenta is definitely marmite but very period and looks good if you get the right darker shade. White is on the list in case I decide to keep the car a 1977 colour. The 77 colours were not great.

Has anyone got a breakdown of what colour all the Stags were when they were produced?

My mistake, should have been clearer.

I meant how many were painted each of the colours e.g. We know most were left in primer, or “White” as we call it nowadays;-)

Would be interesting to see how many choose Brown, instead of more conventional colours.

                      Hi Guys,

I'm in a similar situation to Grundy John. The main difference is the car i'm looking at which is about £6k was Pimento red and has been resprayed White - Both colours i really like and has had a lot of restoration work.

The extent of the respray didn't reach the inside of the doors or the deep reaches of the engine bay but looks like an excellent finish everywhere else.

The advice i'm after is should i just buy and enjoy the Stag as it is and respray it Red another time, or go down the original route and get it resprayed red straight away?

                      Cheers.

If it was me I wouldn't be rushing to respray it - I bought a brown one for goodness sake.....We're all different though and only you will know if that will irk you. Thing is you will probably be into £4-5k to get a decent engine out respray - not sure how you could respray a car a completely different colour without doing the inside of the doors/door shuts. That would annoy me but if the car was the right money I would probably get over it

At the end of the day, your car and only you can make the choice. Oh and welcome to the forum and the club

I agree with Paul Goldstar when he wisely said you will get into a huge expense if you respray with engine out. You may wish to, but take it from me, mine is in for a respray right now and it is definitely a bit opening of pandora's box. Mine seemed fine when it went in, but a little wire wheeling exposed lots of hidden rust that would have bubbled to the surface (sills, etc) in 12-18 months and exposed very poor welding and braising that needs to be rectified. Not a fun time as I was expecting very few issues to arise.

If you are ok with the colour and the odd not painting of inside of the doors, just enjoy the car for now.

...just to show you what I mean - not so nice welding patch work. I could have done better and I haven't touched a welder since high school.

                              Thanks Guys, much appreciated.

I've spoken to a few guys in the club who sent their cars in for a "simple" respray and ended up spending a lot on repairs.

Oddly, that's why i like the Stag...its cheeky and there's always plenty to do!

There's another one for sale that needs quite a bit of work so i may go for that one as i know it'll need a good strip down which will show the niggles i'll have to sort...i'll just hide the bills from my wife!

                              Cheers.

I saw a freshly painted Russet car at Engunity and it looked stunning. My car was very flat when I bought it and although it looked better when polished the paint was to far gone to bring back to the same condition as the Engunity car. If the bodywork is good I would repaint it Russet. To keep costs down you may have to compromise on the engine bay. In the end I painted my car Magenta.
