I wonder how many engines have been damaged by sandblasting?

I bought some nice alloy rocker covers for my Tiger last year. When I realised they had been sandblasted I must have spent hours cleaning them out. I wasstill not satisfied so theyhave beenwaiting to go into a dishwasher.

years ago I bought a Dolly Sprint that the oil pressure had disappeared on following a recon cylinder head - I got the car for peanuts primarily for the head but also to get a spare block for rebuild and use in my normal road Sprint.

Took the cam cover off and all was nice and sparkly and nice clean oil so whizzed off the oil pump to see why the pressure had dropped. The pump internals were absolutely wrecked, and far beyond normal wear. When I washed the pump off, I noticed the rotor housing was sparkly. Took the engine out and every bearing was wrecked including the jackshaft.

So I took off the head to shove in the spares box. As I stood it on its end I noticed something glitter in the oil running off. Turns out the reconditioner had bead-blasted the head with glass beads and failed to wash them all out, then the owner hadn't washed the head either...... the cam bearings ironically weren't too bad.

Just a few glass beads caused such carnage - have your engine bits chemically cleaned - it's a lot safer.
