    Crank Pulley

    Hi all,

Can anyone tell me how far does the crank pulley sit back inside the timing chain cover?

I know before anyone says it yes i did tighten up the bolt an make sure it was slipped over the keyway correctly its just I am hearing a funny noise around that area when the car has warmed up and I can see about half an inch gap between the stepped part of the pulley and the casing and I couldn't find a picture to compare it with so I thought I would ask!

Actually feeling a right prat now as I can tell its in the correct position as it cannot sit behind the timing plate marker doh!!!

    Sorry!!!!

    Thanks

    Paul

From the step to the end of the pulley shaft is only 1" I think the pulley shaft should only show approx 1/4 to 3/8" when fitted. Did you lubricate the oil seal with grease before you refitted the pulley? if not the oil seal could be squealing.

Check the viscous coupling! These don't last forever and I have heard of a lot of failures lately. The fan blade should stop within a 1/4 turn if spun by hand when cold(engine stopped of course ) and there should be no play at all in the bearings if you try and rock it.

If the bearing is going they can make noises when hot, and if onefails completely you can be looking at a new radiator as well. Couplings for Mk1 Stags are onobtainable new and different to the Mk2, so you need to know which one you have. The Mk1 fan is secured on studs in the coupling, the Mk2 fan is bolted through it.
