    Cam Cover gaskets

I have a drip of oil that annoyingly finds its way onto the RH exhaust. I've traced it to the Cam cover gaskets so I've ordered new gaskets, half moon rubber bungs and screw sealing rings. My question is what is best to use to fix/set/seal the gaskets in place?
    Advice gratefully received.
    Thanks

the way we were trained (just after the ark was finished) was that cork gaskets were stuck to the rocker cover with evo stick (other adhesive are available) and then the gasket to head face were lightly greased with LM grease. works for me.

+1, for the evostick, grease if you want to remove soon, or stag seal if you don't.make sure the covers are not bent through overtightening and half moons sit flush and buy the thicker gaskets from LD parts, simples

        Morning all,
Anyone have any opinions/advice regarding the black silicone cam cover gaskets which are available ?
Query:- do they actually make as good or better a seal than the cork ones,?
And crucially, any leaks after fitting ? (I have black RTV silicone to stick the gaskets to the edge of the cam covers, so they can't move during fitting.)
I have acquired new "half-moons" and a new set of the washers for fitting under the cover mounting screws when the gaskets are replaced.
Hoping for an end to the slight (but annoying) weeps from both covers !
        Thanks,

        Neil.

Thanks for the prompt and very helpful replies Phil and M&M.
I don't think the covers have been off since the engine was rebuilt by Howard Vesey back in '89/90 so I wonder what he used and how easy it will be to clean up!
If I'm honest I was expecting comments such as 'use Blue Hylomar' or other such sealant.
I've already ordered gaskets from SOC parts so I'm sure they will be fine.
I don't think I've heard of Stag Seal - is there a particular type to use, and is it easily obtainable?
Do I use the same sealant on the half moons?

          Thanks again

Have always used cork gaskets for rocker covers. As others have said bond the gasket to the cover and then a light smear of grease on the gasket before bolting up to the heads. A few points to note - some already mentioned:

            1. Clean all traces of the old gaskets/adhesive/sealant from the covers and the head mating surface.
            2. Make sure the flange on the rocker covers is flat and has a nice step. Older covers tend to get distorted by over tightening. They are easy to straighten outwith a bit of patience.
            3. Check the mating surface on the head is free from burrs, remove any you find with a fine file or small block with emery cloth to get them flat. (make sure any "swarf" doesn't get into the head.
            4. Fit the cork gaskets to the rocker covers using some form of adhesive. Personally I am not keen on silicone or RTV types for this. Blue Hylomar is no good as it doesn't actually stick. The stag seal is actually called Stag Wellseal ( https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Hermetite-S...00ml/530706761 ) [shop around for best price] It is good stuff but in my opinion is a bit "thin" for the rocker gaskets. My preference for a bullet proof bond is to use Tiger Seal or other PU based adhesive/sealant. Bonds weal and is also a good gap filler. Once stuck place the covers on a flat surface with some weights on top to clamp the gasket. Leave over night so that the gasket sticks well and there is no danger of it moving when fitted to the car.
            5. Fit the "half moons". Make sure the top surface is flush. Some require trimming with a sharp blade.
            6. When ready smear the cork gasket surface with a thin(ish) film of grease and fit the covers.
            7. Refit the four screws - which the condition of the sealing washers. DO NOT over tighten them, you only need to "nip" them up. It only serves to distort the flange on the cover and cause leaks if over tightened.

The covers will be easy to remove next time you need to and can be refitted without replacing the gaskets. I replaced my gaskets when I first got the car 10 years ago and the covers have been off quite a few times since and I still have no leaks from them. I have always used this technique on all my old cars with this type of gasket and never had an issue with leaks. The important bits are to make sure the flange on the rocker cover is straight and has not been flattened by over tightening and there are no burrs on the "soft" aluminium head mating face.

              Great advice Roger, thank you.
What would you 'seal' the half moons with, or are they fitted 'dry'?

I'm of the same opinion, although I used to use red hermatite making sure it has set a little before putting the cover onto the engine. The compression of the cork should be sufficient to seal the joint providing of course the mating faces are clean and dry.

                    stag wellseal for me,

stick the gasket to cover, after making sure it is straight of course.

wellseal on the half moons and also on the head face of the gasket

assemble and do not over tighten it.

I do need to check the securing screws occasionally as the rubber seal under them does tend to soften over time

                      All fitted.
Covers and head surfaces cleaned with a combination of Brake cleaner, Carb Cleaner, Meths and careful scraping with a screwdriver, Stanley blade knife and thumb/fingernails.
Gaskets stuck with Tiger seal (covers clamped to a piece of wood overnight), gasket then smeared with grease and fitted after fitting the new half moons with a smear of silicone. I'm not sure the half moons were flush, but assumed they would compress (I didn't want to try to trim and end up with insufficient compression to seal).
Everything seems OK - there may be a slight weep from the rear half moon LH side, but I'll keep an eye on it.

                      Thanks for all the advice.
