    What are your recommendations?

I'm turning my attention to the major mechanical bits at the moment and don't want to get parts of low quality as seems to be more or less the norm in the Stag world....

I've previously had very bad experience with things like bearings and oil seals from Asia / China where the bearings were rough as they came out of the box and the oil seal lips had moulding flash on them!

Any tips or recommendations to avoid this for

    - brake calipers
    - rear wheel cylinders
    - Universal Joints
    - Diff, Drive Shaft, Gearbox Oil Seals
    - Diff, Drive Shaft, Gearbox Bearings
    - Ball Joints

I will be seeing what New Old Stock is available for some bits, but 30 year old rubber seals as NOS is probably not too great an idea.

    Cheers

    Drew

I would talk to Peter at LD parts. He only stocks
good quality parts. If he doesn't have the part you want he may be able to advise.

Brake Calipers, have a look at, http://www.biggred.co.uk/index.html

I have used them on a number of occasions on different cars, not just Classics. I have always been very pleased.

I have some on my Stag, fitted last summer, they still look good and as can be seen by me leaving this message they still work.

      Hope this helps. Don Kennedy

Thanks, but after this on one of my other forums I'll pass .....

        .....................................
Right just got of my calipers back, not good

sent them a pair of ATE 4pot alloy callipers from a Ferrari to be remanufactured as they list on their web site
        http://www.biggred.co.uk/process.html

Now is states that they change all 4 pistons and seals with me so far, Ok well i got the cailpers back and paid £278.90.

What did i get for my money ?

Badly painted callipers, the finish is very mat and very porous finish, nothing like what you get say with brembos.

Only 2 out of the 8 pistons were changed and the 2 changed are made from steel and not alloy and 1 of them is not the right type.

They cut off the stainless steel crossover pipe and replaced it with copper pipe that is way too big and will foul on the inside of the wheel .

They have cross threaded where the brake pipe screws in to the calliper.

They reused the bolts that hold the 2 half of the calliper together and left them bear uncoated steel, these will rust when they get wet and look very bad.

They say they did not have the right pistons so they just fitted some they had lying around !

        The copper pipes they say

        Quote:
"We do not offer a replacement of copper pipes, we merely did these because we had some pipe available and the time. They are neither costed in the price or advertised as a service."

The problem is the threads are now stripped and there in not much room for a helicoil.

So i now have a pair of scrap 348 calipers

This illustrateshow difficult it is toapprove the quality of parts; one person has had good experience, another a bad one. One bad egg is not proof of a bad batch, neither is one good one.

To be honest, my first thought was just to order everything from Peter as I have only good experience from him.

Looking at the parts just shows that the items are sourced from First Line, who is simply a distributor.

A small bit of research shows that Stag Rear Wheel Cylinders are available from:

            Metalli 04-0309
            Delphi Lockheed LW11571
            CASE IH C527
            Fissori FBW1555
            Quinton Hazell BWC3019
Chinese Manufacturer whose website just shows the part number in Mandarin

So what are First Line putting in the box?

Generally true, but a company which reconditions brakes for a 175 m.p.h car as described above deserves crossing off the list forever. Not just because of the mistakes, but because they didn't even acknowledge that mistakes were made!

I can't disagree with that. So why don't we all start with a big list of all the suppliers, then cross the guilty ones off one by one based on a trial by 'forum jury'?

That will weed out the bad ones. But what will we do when there are none left on the list?

Then we illuminate the clouds at night with the STAG symbol and wait for SOCTFL-Man to come to the rescue!

I can only give my experience. Not based on one experience but on four, also I know of others who have used them and been very pleased.
