    Brake hoses

Hello People, I will be attempting to replace rear/front brake hoses to s/s braided also the rear copper ones to flexi. Whilst doing this is it wise to replace the brake fluid? if so which one?, LDParts recommend Dot 5.1.

I will really appreciate some guidance on this. Cananyone guide me as to howbest to replace hoses and fluid..please.

As always your thoughts and advise will be devoured greedily.

    Sukh.

Sukh, if you were just changing the brakes and the fluid is new then there would be no need to replace, but as you are replacing all the hoses both back and front then you may find most of the oil will end up bleeding out anway.

Hiya Sukh, if LD recommend dot 5.1 then go for it. Personally Ihave just replaced the 4 hoses for SS braided. Changing the fluid at the same time is a superior idea. Pump out as much of it as you can, through all the nipples, be prepared for one or more of the rearsto break off, then replace them allwith stainless ones.

Changing the hoses is straightforward. All the fittings are soft, so use hex spanners, not 16 point. If you have any difficulty bleeding, go for one of the pressure bleed systems like Gunsons Eazibleed, ora vacuum pump like the one Kryten spoke of. In my opinion, you should avoid Silicone fluid though I'm sure some will disagree, it's very expensive, and you can finish up with a spongy pedal that will not bleed out. Good luck mate, Martin.

Martin, Do I bleed off the fluid first then change the hoses, close off the nipples add fluid and then bleed?..... and I agree with not using silicone.

Opps sorry did not read through your reply,.then replace them allwith stainless ones. Thanks for the advise Martin, Ian.

Hi, although it's messy, fill the system with the bleed nipples open,go round and close them as fluid starts to drip out, and then bleed.

You're not going to avoid a bit of a mess, but it'll be much worse if you don't bleed out first. Martin.

If you go the eazibleed route, you will need to get hold of a spare cap for your master cylinder. The caps that come with it, and the 'universal' fitting kit are too small. If you can't get hold of a second hand one, paddocks sell them separate from the reservoir.

I also used the eazibleed to get the fluid out of the system. Pressurised it at the top and opened the bleed valves at the bottom to blow the fluid out before filling with fresh fluid.

              Hi Sukh,
I attempted to fit s/s hoses on my Stag last summer, and found it a pig of a job. The copper rigid pipes were turning round with the securing nuts, and as I have no facility to flare some new pipes, I ended up taking to a chap in our SOC area who has his own garage.
He too had his work cut out, and had to make two new rear copper pipes, and grind off the front rigid pipes at the hose union junction on the chassis.
Interestingly he had a vacuum appliance to suck out the old fluid, and suck the new fluid through (to save bleeding), and he too recommended me to give silicone fluid a miss.
Unless you can flare your own pipes, I would be very careful when trying to remove the old ones - suspect mine may have been originals!!
              good luck!
              Peter

Thanks Peter, That read like horror story to me. After the nightmare I had fitting new lower ball joints with the sized bolts/nuts, I had to angle grind nearly every nut and bolt:X.

I really don't fancy doing it now, you have succeeded in putting the frighteners on.I only just recovered from the ball joint torture
