    P149 Electronic Ignition Kit

I see a P149 electronic ignition kit for sale on E-Bay for £49.99. This is for the single points distributor like mine. Has anyone had any experiences with this set up or any better recommendation?

I fitted one and modified it to fit the twin points dizzy. All I can say is it works. How reliable it is I can't tell as my car is still off the road. Its really not rated for use with a 6v coil and should not be run with a coil less than 3 ohms (the stag is i believe 1.5 ohms). If its not giving a weak spark (mine doesn't seem to) then it should be OK but its a bit of a gamble. I am going to try mine with a 12v feed to the unit but still running the ballasted coil.

You can probably buy the exact same kit cheaper if you buy it for the rover v8, its the same unit.

    Hope that helps

Cheers Ian. My coil is a 12v coil. Can I take it then that this is not the normal coil for my Mk1 Stag? Since I drove it up from London after buying it in December, with no problems, I have put new points, plugs, leads etc but due to a combination of working abroad and the snow haven't had a chance to drive it. But think I would prefer to have it running on electronic ignition of some sort.

As far as I know All stags were built with ballasted coils. If your's has a 12V coil and is a mark 1 (which I think it must be with single points) then the ballast resisitor has probably been bypassed. In which case you can fit yours as per the instructions.

It has a ballast resistor hooked up to it - it was actually a new one I fitted as the old one looked the worse for wear. Oh dear probably more digging needed to be done.

If it really is a 12V coil then just bypass the resistor and fit the electronic unit. It will have a fixed dwell so it will make the spark stronger at higher revs than the single points can achieve. So long as you haven't had cold start problems the electronic unit will be way better in normal running.

You could measure the resistance of your coil if you have a multimeter. I would have thought a 12v coil running at 6V through the ballast, would have given some kind of trouble at high revs.
