Trick I learned from my Dad was to put new plates on any secondhand car you buy because it makes the car look newer. Most Dealers do the same when selling a car. Which is why many classics ended up on the yellow and white plates.

I like Black and Silver plates, especially the pressed metal ones. However, I think they look too old for a Stag.

Will probably fit plastic 3D Black and Silver ones that look good.

Also you can buy those plates without producing your Registration.

If you are buying plates without producing the correct documentation, then they are probably “show” plates and not legal for road use. Legal plates must have the BSAU number and the postcode of the plate maker.

FWIW, I agree with post #8. I could have written it myself........

Totally agree Dave, I had to produce my paperwork/proof of ownership for my black and silver plates.

I took paperwork with me and even a couple of photos of the car but as he knew me he wasn't too bothered about the documentation. They cost me £30 which I thought was reasonable. I've seen some on-line at a similar price but they seemed to involve sending off original paperwork (no copies allowed) and I thought buying over the counter was easier. Plus of course it supports local business and only took 2 days to make

No expert, but I don’t believe It’s illegal to have plates that don’t display this BSAU if the car was registered before 2001.

So for the initiated who live in the backwaters of USA.. whats ANPR parking?

Is it auto billing (like the congestion charge) or do you still pay at a machine?

I ask because I got caught in Auckland NZ without a chip/pin credit card and could not park ANYWHERE!

Yes I think you are correct - the actual date is 1st September 2001.

So they don’t use it to bill you, just to whack you if you overstay?

It's just a case to be different.
When everyone had black plates in the 60's, it was modern and cool to have the yellow and white with a new car.
In the late 80's I fitted black plates to the Stag, again to be different when everyone had yellow and white. I was 19 though!
Being a 74, actually illegal, but never a problem, being on an old car, and of course now legal.
                          Mike.

The cameras at the entrance to Sainsburys car park in Keighley don't recognise my black and white plates so I suppose you could park there for more than 2 hours.
Having to spend more than 2 hours in Keighley is not something I'd wish on my worse enemy though

Last year when I first encountered these particular cameras in Sainsburys they flashed up the registration on my Ford Fiesta, which of course has the normal reflective plates but when I went in a few weeks ago nothing happened so it may be that this camera is either faulty or has been de-activated. I haven't been in with the Stag so don't know what would happen.

wasn't there some discussion about the likes of Tesco's & Co being able to access your private data via DVLA?
