    temp up again

so just to see what you guys think temp went up today very near red I was stuck in long traffic for 1.5 hours when I noticed it luckily I could pull of to the side road let I cool .thought I may aswell call the aa as traffic in the area was jammed so would have got stuck again he couldn't really find anything wrong now temp back to normal he just said the elec fan is not very good and maybe flush the rad drove back home down side roads for 1.5 hours now is ok
so what we done last year
    super gill rad
    new thermostat
    viscous
    front spoiler
full block flush and top up blue antifreeze
and its been really good not even reaching half way
so what could have happened today

Mine was doing this when I first bought it. 2 things were:
    1. The voltage regulator was incorrectly installed meaning it was putting normal voltage through the sender and gauge meaning it was reading high.

    3. It still played up when it was hot. I checked all the hoses and the bypass and heater hoses (I think) were swapped meaning that a lot of the water was bypassing the radiator. Swapped them over and never read a temp over half.

Not sure if these help, but were issues I had with cooling.

why not get one of those digital laser thermometers to check the actual temp of the rad and block? Would save fiddling with the voltage regulator unless it is absolutely necessary. They are reasonably accurate, near enough for checking the parts of the system for anomalies - thermostat housing, rad top and bottom, left and right, etc

Such as on eBay Temp Meter Temperature Gun Non-contact Digital Laser IR Infrared Thermometer New

what is even better is a boiler temp gauge
these are a thermometer made to fit on boiler flow or return pipes, just clips round a hose or pipe with a spring and gives a real readout of the pipe temperature around a fiver from good plumbers suppliers

I think the gauge is ok I can remember looking at the stabilizer few years ago as my fuel was over reading the aa guy checked the temps the right side of rad read 92 left was 87 same as thermostat 88 the thing is it seems to have sorted its self out as I was stuck in a bit of traffic on the way back too could it be sticky thermostat even though its only about a year old from a good supplier

What about the temperature sender? If the voltage stabiliser is OK, and everything else checks out, I’d consider fitting a new one. These come highly recommended: http://www.ldparts.co.uk/shop/shop.p...6860d6260ea912

Traffic will do it on a moderately warm day. Mine was going between below N to near Hot on Sunday last, a brief run in clear air cooled it.
Traffic jams as we know them today hadn’t been invented when our Stags were made…

If your stuck in traffic and the temp goes up try popping the bonnet catch, let's a little bit more air flow

And turn the heater full on of course... Just what you need on a hot day is a Stag heater going full blast

If the RH heater control slider is fully up, then no heat enters the cabin even if the heater is on HOT. Mine is on HOT 365 days of the year.

You know, I hadn't given that any thought! Modern cars always have a continuous circulation heater matrix,

Given that there's an Air box flap "off", they could have saved money by removing the valve and it's controls.

The only benefit I can think of is an ability to slightly increase engine warm up time but surely that's pretty negligible?

The Austin 1300 I used to drive as a teenager had a coolant valve for the heater but as I recall, the air supply was always live so the temperature mix was regulated by the heater valve.

Adding an electric fan did the job for me , when stuck in traffic for a long time mine would go up
now i can switch the fan on from inside the car if needed
Also look for a product called Millers Extracool it works a treat
                            Hope this helps

Have to agree, that was my band aid fix while I wait for a suitable opportunity to get around to flushing the cooling system, maybe fitting the fan cowl, header tank - maybe...external pump...got it, need to get around to fitting.

I know purists may say "if everything is perfect, it shouldn't be needed" but 43 years later, things aren't perfect anymore
