fitment of nearside front exhaust pipe

    Hi All

I fitted both front exhaust pipes this evening. Came across a slight problem with the nearside one. The bracket on the exhaust which should bolt up to bracket on the gearbox support member is about half an inch too far back towards the rear of the car:?.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is it a case of slackening off the support member from the gearbox, barringit backwards, inserting the bolt into the exhaust and then pulling it all back into place?

    Comments please.

    Thanks as always

    Hi Bruce,

Can't remember if you've got a manual or auto, but a few weeks ago when I was trying to work out what bits on mine had been changed when it was converted from auto to manual -having noticed that the brackets on the front pipes were hanging in thin air,I found this page of front pipes from Rimmers useful

    http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID000009

I don't know if there is any difference in the pipe bends between the different applications, but the position of the rear bracket is definitely different between the type 65 auto and the manual versions and it looks like the j-type o/d version has its bracket just a bit closer to the end of the pipe than the a-type one - perhaps you've got a j-type pipe and an a-type o/d:?

    John.

EDIT: just read your clutch pipe post so now know you are going auto to manual. According to the parts listed the BW35 auto is the same as the A-type o/d.

    John.

Just followed your link, interesting that a 'Recommended accessory' to an exhaust is a baseball cap :?.

I guess you have to stick it on with the 'exhaust jointing paste'

          Hi Bruce,

Does it all line up correctly? Where did it come from?

I had aweful trouble fitting my exhaust. It was the high grade stainless version from our friends in Lincoln.

While I was struggling, I borrow a system from paddocks and although I didn't actually fit it, it did appear to line up much better.

In the parts book, there does appear to be three different versions, which are manual (non o/d), manual o/d and auto type 65. Unsure what the difference is, but its likely to be the brackets for the different gearbox options.

Thinking about it, the brackets which support the rear gearbox mount which fit through the floor under the carpet can be fitted in two different positions. Implies there are two lenghts of gearbox. So you might have the wrong exhaust one with the bracket in the wrong place?

I inherited the ss exhaust on my car-- I spent a considerable amount of time adjusting it as I wasn't happy with the fit---The RIMMERS stickers were still on it:?

              Hi

The complete exhaust system and the engine came off my donor car. The only difference being that I have replaced the BW35 auto box with an A type MOD box. According to the parts list the front pipes are the same for both those types of gearbox so the exchange should not have made any difference.

After fully tightening up the front pipes onto the manifold the securing hole on the exhaust bracket is about 10mm out. I think that once the car is moveable under its own power I will pop it up on the ramps and use my pistol drill to create a new hole in the exhaust bracket to line up with the gearbox bracket. Not perfect but simple.
