What a sociable car the Stag is......

No that doesn't mean it goes out on it's own with it's mates (but he might:P)......

I have just got mine running again after a few weekshaving had a coolant leak from the inlet manifold by no1 inlet, and had forgotten howI can hardlystop in a car park or at a set of lights without someone wanting to talk Stag with me.....

Having a Stag isa great way to meet people...... but am I going to miss that when he's laid up in his bed for the winter??? I think I might......

Anyone else have experiences like mine when out and about?

Yes, it's a classic car thing. If you're driving up the motorway, passengers will turn around and look at you as they overtake; if you stop in the petrol station some old bloke will come up and tell you he had one or always wanted one; if you go to the supermarket, there's often someone looking at it in the car park when you return; if you're working on it in your drive passers-by will remark 'nice car' or stop for a chat. The other bit of classic car ownership I like is that people are generally more courteous to you on the road e.g. readily letting you out of junctions whereas they'd ignore you or cut you up in your modern dull mobile.

Just noticed my 300th post! Time for a party :dude::dude:. I'd buy you all a round of drinks, but you know how is it.....

Exactly the same happens to me when I pick up my kids - my little boy is in year 2 and he has regular requests for playdates from his little pals, and "can your Daddy pick us up in his Stag?"

Apparently my daughters year 6 teacher says in the classroom "there goes your Dad Hannah!" when I drive past the school..... that V8 sound makes you highly recognisable - she says it's embarrassing, but you can see in her face she really quite likes the noteriety......

Plus sometimes I might have the V8 spinning at about 6000 rpm, full throttle,at the time - just for fun you know........

I have a mixed time with my kids. The youngest (11) and all her mates love it. The oldest (16) wouldn't be seen dead in it. She claims it's embarrassing just sitting on the drive way, never mind actually travelling in it. Ho hum.

Not many people overtake me on the motorway - usually the other way round!! - The Stag gets lots of attention, I even had 18 year old ladsbegging to go out in it and they have loved it, even more than their hot hatches. I had a 30 something lady asking to swap it for her BMW 5 series. A man with his mouth wide open staring as if I had dropped in from the Mars as I drove by. Kids imitating the V8burble,people saying they always wanted one, or had one and "oh weren't they trouble?" I reply, I think after 30 years it's problems are sorteddon't you?

Its a looker with characterand a great soundtrack so it's no suprise!

I teach motor vehicle technology at college and recently took my Stag infor a service (well to get students to do it). The interest was amazing, other students from other areas came to have a look.

The motorsport students wanted to put it on the Dyno!!. NEVER!!!! I replied.... They genuinely loved the sound of the Stag and asked where I got the exhaust from. When I told them it was standard but stainless steel they could not believe it. A so called oldie like me with an awesome car! not my comments but theirs!!!!

When i took mine for an MOTi sat in the waiting room and saw the young lad drive it in to the work shop .after that all i could hear was burble /roar/burble/roar,there must be a new part to the MOT to do with throttle peddle smoothness i thought to myself:P

You trusted the students with your precious spark plug threads??????

I wouldn't trust an apprentice with alloy plug threads for ages when I was training them ever since one cross-threaded and stripped a Rover 2600 one when the car had to go back to the customer 30 mins later - thank god for having my own helicoil set, a large quantity of LM grease for the swarf and a lot of luck in doing it in situ because of the taper seat spark plugs.....

'Huggy' has been forced out of hibernation over the last week as my regular car (Alfa 156) has managed to loose a tooth on the cambelt and is now awaiting an engine transplant at the local Alfa specialist. I've dropped the hardtop back on and actually find it nice to drive and relatively comfortable. More people seem to remark about it now than during the summer which I guess is as you just don't see so many on the roads at this time of year. Does look good with the hardtop as well!

Try doing that on a 'Dolly Sprint' the plugs are recessed down a 6 inch tube!

I have not yet driven mine with the hardtop on - as I have mentioned in another thread I am just about to start a refurb on it - have set up a marquee in the garden to give me some space to do it, as until I can get shot of my boat I have no garage to use.... will build one where the boat stands now (it's 21ft long with a 6ft 6" beam) so will leave a fair space for a Staghouse..........

Guess what Alan - I did! In 1981 I was working for the RAC as a Road patrolman and was called to a mimosa yellow one with a recent recon engine in Caterham Surrey at 2 in the morning. It had popped no2 plug due to no thread and I had to A bar it back to the guys house in Catford - on the way back we were chatting and he said how peed off he was as he was getting a company car in a few days, and he was flogging the Sprint, but now would have a huge bill for removing the head and having it sorted.

Next thing I know, I'm offering him a derisory amount for the car which he accepted so I dropped him off in Catford, got some dosh from the cashpoint and bought the car at 4am. He gave me the docs and I A barred it home!

Next day bought a helicoil kit (the same one which got me out of trouble with the Rover) and did it in situ - When you remove the cam cover and the tube the drill just reaches, as does the coil tap when taped into the ratchet end of a socket extension. 30 mins and a load of grease later I had a great running Dolly Sprint - my first of 6 over the years - such a fun car......
