    Immobiliser recommendations?

    hi everyone,

I've got to fit an immobiliser to the stag for my insurance. Fortunately the club insurance has told me that I can do it my self though.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations? was thinking of a Toad sterling or a cobra 8510 which I can get on Ebay for about £30. has anyone had experience of these?

    cheers,

    Toby

what sort of immobiliser would be my first question. If it needs to be thatcham then I have a cobra unit fitted which needs a dongle to disable each time I start. It works well enough but easily bypassed.

If not thatcham then something like a relay controlled switch to the white feed from the ignition switch should do the trick with a small switch hidden away someplace.

IIRC the white feed from the ignition switch controls the coil, starter solenoid and fuel pump among many other things. but would effectively immobilise your car.

Or fit one of those nicecrooklock things that covers the whole steering wheel
Stags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony

yep - needs to be Thatcham Cat 2. will prob go for the Cobra then.thanks!

realise that they can be bypassed pretty easy but as long as the insurers are happy I don't mind. I imagine quite a few classic car thefts go off on the back of a lorry anyway...?

        Hi,

I can recommend the Microscan MI600 unit. Thatcham 2 certified, passive type. It includes a ring that goes around the ignition switch and a key fob. As soon as you stick the key in the ignition it is disabled.

Personally I would recommend the Toad Powerkey which is a cat 2 immobiliser.

Regarding the Thatcham status you may find that you need to have the alarm fitted or checked by an approved fitter who will be able to issue you with a certificate to keep the insurance company happy.

I fitted same alarm, cost £55 in 2004from a company called Trading Direct, Thatcham 2 certified, 2 circuits immobilised, single flashing ledwhen armed, otherwise invisible, no problems. Installers want an arm and leg to fit a system.

Insurance company were happy for me to install and forward them copies of the paperwork.

I wouldn't consider a system that I had to touch a fob into a socket every time Igot into the car!

Probably a daft thought........... but have you tried alternative insurance companies ? Personally I hate being given additional conditions of cover (just winds me up) there are companies who don't mandate one.

Obviously a different kettle of fish if you actually want to fit one though.

                ...........Andy
