    filling a MOD gearbox with oil

    Hi All

    Has anyone got a good tips on how to fill an A type MOD gearbox with oil? There is no space under the car to get the oil container above and alongside the box for gravity to work its magic.

    Is there a cheap hand pump gadget available for transferring the oil from the can into the gearbox?

    Hi bruce

    i use a oil gun to fill mine but i did hear a tip which was to put the standard bottle that the oil comes into a mastic gun and compress the bottle pushing the oil out more easily must admit i havnt tried it though

      Bruce,

      Remove the filler plug, then remove the access panel in the passenger's footwell. Use an extension hose and thread it into the box, attach the 1-litre plastic bottle of oil to the tube and squeeze away. Not the easiest of boxes to fill, but this way does work.

            Hi Bruce

            machine mart do a big oil syringe which i think was about £15 really made this job easy with box in situ. it holds about 3/4 liter per plunge. and really good for top ups and correct quantities.

              G'day Bruce,

              I use a length of garden hose with a 90 deg copper plumbingunion secured with a tie-wrap at one end.

              Open the bonnet and feed the hose and fitting down the back of the engine along the side of the gearbox. Push the 90 deg copper union into the gear box filler hole, it is a nice snug fit.

              Put a funnel in the open end of the garden hose and fill the gearbox from the engine bay!

              You have to measure how much you put in or you will overfill the gearbox which will then drain out to the correct level over the garage floor.:X

                  I made a 12v. pump do the job. I got the pump from Harbor Freight on this side of the pond.

                  I use it to top off the tranny, differential, and other uses.
                  I change oil every 2500 miles, and filter every 5000. I can suck the oil out of the dipstick tube when I don't have to go under to get the filter.
                  I can pump the radiator dry without having to mop the garage floor afterward.
                  I flush the residue from the pump and tubing with used oil or water depending on which job I am about to do.

                  I put the brass fittings on the output to control flow. I added a microswitch to the handle.

                      I have had it a while and I am sure was cheaper when I got it!! but it is great. I must admit I got it when we had a Land Rover and a Range Rover so there was a lot of gear oil to deal with - but makes the job very easy.

                        Thanks for the tip off NickAfter visiting Paddocks in Chester this afternoon I popped into Machine Mart and bought this 0.5 litre syringe. It only cost £7

                        If I saw a doctor coming towards me with one that size I would run a mile:shock:.
