    Strange wiring noise

Gave the Stag a good 200 mile run on Saturday; hottest day of the year and the new radiator and kenolowe setup worked to perfection. Only strange thing was an odd mechanical rubbing sound on acceleration and deceleration.

Had a look on Sunday morning to discover the alternator had been rubbing on the bottom hose clamp and has cut 2/3 of the way though the wire. Feck that could have been worse!

There just doesn't seem to be any room for the hose to route from the radiator to the metal pipe without a) getting too close to the alternator or b) clonking on the chassis leg. This makes me wonder if I've got the hoses right as the top and bottom hoses are a difference part no. Anyone got an easy way of identifying which is which.

Also anyone got a decent picture to show the clearances? I've attached a couple of pictures but they don't really show how tight the gap is.

[1] just realised I've got a high capacity radiator fitted it was originally from Tony Hart then re-cored locally . Could this be buggering up the fitment?

Have a look at this thread:

PS. out of curiosity, why did you need to have a TH Supergill re-cored?
    The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

can only say when I fitted my original supergil and stainless pipes from TH that I had to trim the bottom hose as it was too long, have seen similar comments from others

The hose on the water pump end should be 90 degrees, and the one on the radiator should be about 100 deg. angle. "Some people" supply the same for both ends of the metal pipe, which over stretches the rubber and causes the problem you are having. It is a tight fit down there, but with the correct hoses it will all fit together properly.

Good point, Mike; I had that problem a few years back, until I worked out the difference between the two. My knuckles were a real mess after struggling against the cheese-grater effect of the radiator core fins!

It was damaged from the kenlowe "through the radiator" mounts and as I was having a boss fitted for a temperature sensor and mount for the electric fan fitted I thought it was worth have re-cored as the local radiator company were not hugely impressed with the Supergill.

I've just taken 1cm off the bottom hose and that's good enough. Clearances are now a lot better, Shimmed out the mounting bracket by 1/4" as well

OK. Mirrors my own experience. Thought I was alone.

that still looks very close, thought about lifting the alternator "up top"?

                    Possibly a fake one?

It's better but yes could do with a bit more clearance. I might get a longer bolt for the metal pipe and shim that out by 1/2" as well. And I haven't considered move the alternator; I want to keep the look as original as I can

Perfect answer! I'm sure they are the right way around and are different but will check and change if required the next time the anti-freeze needs changing.
