Teak or Walnut - that is the question?

Hi all, I know I'm probably opening a can of worms which has probably been discussed many times, but the question is - Teak or Walnut?

I recently purchased some teak for the dash and consul etc, which initially looked a good match. I started with the easy bits on the consul and polished them with clear satin liqueur, but now they look milky and more like light oak . I've since done some investigation and found that the teak will have this problem as it is an oily wood which is what I found when I was rubbing it down to polish, and I believe why the varnish went milky.

I took the car to a local company who deal in veneers and he believes (although not 100%) that it is walnut. I'm not convinced as walnut is a lot darker than the veneer on my car, I appreciate age and sunlight will have bleached and changed the colour but thought I'd get the opinion of the experts.

    Any suggestion?

There are lots of walnut variations.

IIRC the stag used American Walnut veneer, open the glove box to see the shade it was originally

Did mine yonks ago, only needed to flat the original veneer and re coat it. I will dig out a link to the thread

Just got my dash back from Chapman & Cliff, so thought I would post a couple of pics. No connection to them, just very pleased with the restoration. I

Try a little Tung Oil applied with a cloth over the surface, this really lifts the colour and will penetrate most varnishes. Only takes a minute to apply.

              Cheeky git ,

absolutely not, this is burr walnut veneer fitted by the company that supply dashes for Saab. Rolls Royce wanted them to do work but Burwood refused as RR demanded ridiculous tasks that were impossible.

This was done 30 years ago and is still as good as new, cost at the time, £500.

I've never heard of Tung Oil. I used some boiled Linseed oil on my electric window switches which put them back to black rather than the faded grey look. Anybody used boiled Linseed oil on their dash panels?
