door mirror shaking

Hello all,
after I removed the rhs door mirrors and put it back on again after repainting the door, I have a little problem: The mirror base sits rock solid on the door skin, but the turnable, springloaded stem moves slightly on this base. Hence the top of the mirror keeps shaking. The lhs door mirror does not show this shaking. What can I do? I am a bit reluctant to clue the stem onto the base, as then I can no longer turn it in order to remove the fixing screws.

The problem is caused by a fault in the construction of the mirror. When the base is tightened on to the door skin, the spring loaded washer inside it fouls against the plastic spacer / washer and slightly compresses the spring. This slackens the arm slightly allowing it to shake. It happens on my Stag as well, and I am yet to find a way of stopping it! If you can come up with one, please let me know!

I could not take away any material from the spacer, as there is a 2 cm gap anyway. The spring loaded washer did not foul the paint either. So I am back to zero.....

Sorry I have no hints for you. I was hoping someone else had some as I have the same issue and additionally mine only shows me the a view of the pavement rather than the traffic behind me...

If you loosen the screws that attach the mirror to the door, is the stem still a bit loose?

For me they helped a bit but not quite enough.

I have built in these, but they only stop the vibration of the top on the stem - not the movement of the stem on the base....

Hi, Dieter, I have a spare mirror arm so took a look at it. Perhaps you could put a packing washer under the retaining washer that holds the mirror arm. This would increase the spring pressure and hold the arm tighter. Failing that, you can have my spare if you like, it is very tight.
