Bentley Arnage Owner prefers his Stag...........

From Autocar 3rd July 2019 in an article regarding their long term test of a Bentley Continental GT. The author had used their Conti GT to attend a Bentley Drivers Club (East Midlands Branch) meeting in North Yorkshire and was commenting on the Bentley owners and their “fleets of cars”, the article states;

”As you might expect of Bentley owners, most people I speak to have an impressive fleet of cars. Spencer (David Spencer who owns a 2005 Bentley Arnage) enjoys a Jaguar XJ Sovereign as his daily driver, has a Jaguar E-type and names his favourite a Triumph Stag.”

David Spencer I salute you and I sincerely hope you are an SOC Member and get a just reward for your comments.

As an aside, what cars do other members also own and do you still prefer the Stag? From my own point of view I have a manual + O/d Stag as well as a Mercedes SL 400 Auto and my wife’s Fiesta Vignale Auto. For distance, speed and comfort, give me the moderns any day, but for a pootle around the country lanes and garnering looks and admiration, give me the burble of the Stag any day.

Since june 2004, the Stag has been my one and only car, although I do drive the wife's old Honda Accord when there are a group of us going for a drive somewhere.
Before that I bought a second hand W123 Mercedes 230E in 1987, and only sold that the day before emigrating in the Stag, so was running them both together for 7 years, and I really liked the Merc and was sorry to see it go.

My only car is the Stag. My partner has a Mercedes SLK which we always leave at home when going for a long-distance trip (I mean anything from 200 to 2000 miles) because the Stag is more comfortable. The only downside is that it's a trifle noisier. The Alvis TD21 was only an occasional car, although it performed effortlessly. That's gone now.

Previously I had a Mercedes C-class estate which I stopped driving once I bought the Stag, before that several Peugeots, a couple of Range Rovers and a few Triumph 2.5PI.... I'd swap them all for the Stag, even though mine is in the garage at the moment with no heads!

This risks being embarrassing. My wife and I between us have a BMW X1 2 litre petrol automatic, a VW Golf SV 1.4 petrol automatic, a 1955 Alvis Grey Lady saloon manual, and of course our wonderful Triumph Stag automatic. The daily drivers live outside whilst the older cars are cosseted in a dehumidified garage.
I like driving them all, but my wife dislikes the Grey Lady - manual (with slow synchromesh), drum brakes and no power steering. For the balance of performance and economy the Beamer wins. For economy the Golf wins. For sheer open top smiles per mile regardless of fuel consumption the Stag wins hands down. But my wife would also say the Stag is not as comfortable as the Grey Lady. And the Stag seats have New filling and « leatherette ».

I'm running a loaded Audi A4 quattro and absolutely loving it, my first personal car for over 30 years (I have been subjected to crappy company cars for that long!)
A 67 MGB which I really should sell as I only have limited garage space but I love its simplicity. (note to self.. Buy new house with bigger garage)
A Ford Ranger pickup truck which the whole family (and the street) use for the runs to dump/garden center. Its not pretty, which makes it Ideal..
And my wife's Golf Gti which is fulfilling my boy racer tendencies.. when she lets me.

Can't wait to get the Stag done!!

My other car is a BMW 3 series 335i. Cracking car and brilliant engine - but it's not a Stag. It doesn't have the character the Stag offers even though it obviously outperforms it on so many levels. But it isn't 3 cars in 1 (hard top, soft top, open) and because the rear seats don't go down (extra cost item, that) the Stag is actually better for transporting long and awkward items. The Beemer is quick off the mark, it must be said, and surprisingly economical on a long run at around 40 mpg.
