    Inlet Manifold Gaskets

Just finished heli-coiling the inlet manifold bolt holes, done all 12 to be on safe side, not wanting to have to take it all off again !!

Q :- now armed with some Wellseal and new gaskets, do I stick them to the head first or to the inlet manifold ? Dr Haynes suggests the 'head' but i've also seen posts advising the 'manifold'.... :?

    any advice much appreciated

    cheers

Someone on the forum advised me to stick mine on to the inlet manifold first with gasket sealerand thenbolt four peices of wood(via holes drilled in the woodto match the manifold securing holes)whichclamped the gaskets in place onto the manifold. Left mine overnight like that and then removed the wood, applied gasket sealer to the gaskets and bolted the manifold to the heads. Worked for me.

Apologies to the forum member whoadvised me in the first placefor forgettingtheir name.

      Many thanks Dave,

will give it a go, clamping the gaskets to the manifold sounds alot easier than to the head,

      cheers

If you use wellseal it is very part-able and doesn't really go off .I put my water pump cover on with it then decided to take it off again for some reason the next dayand it came apart easily so pre fitting them with wellseal cant do much.

I'm going to go with wellseal on both faces of the gasket all at once ,i don't see an advantage with sticking to 1 face overnight unless you use a setting type of sealant which i tried last timeand they still weeped a little bit

BTW ,mylocal engineering workshophas a shelf full ofwellseal and reckons its the bees knees which was reasuring.

Isn't helicoiling addictive or is it just me

        Cheers Steve

          thanks Steve,

oooohhhhh its been a hel-icoil of a day !!!,yes, somehow very satisfying.. once I'd made a short tap wrench that I could turn in the space available....

Wellsealseemsto be recommended by many, used it for the first time today on the water pump gasket, I agree that with a non-setting sealer there is no need to sitick overnight,

          back to garage now .......

          cheers for the advice,

Used Wellseal on mine along with the clamp method and process seamed a lot easier than the previous time I did the job without clamping.

Appreciate that Wellseal doesent go off but by clamping the gaskets overnight the gaskets stayed in place whilst lining up the inlet manifold with the heads, no sliding gaskets and only a very very small leak which k seal solved.

Hope it all goes well Dave

Thanks Dave may use your method,The big advantage with wellseal is that you can take it all apart and start again with the same gaskets .

              Cheers Steve

Of course if you had done it right first time then maybe you wouldn't have had to strip and redo it 8 or 9 times:P
