    Heater valve

    Hi guys,
Whilst on a rally this weekend, my heater control became stiff and remains cold despite its position. I suspect the heater valve is the culprit. I have an ROM, but wondered if the "hands on" experts out there could offer any additional guidance as to its removal etc.

    Thanks in advance.

Remove complete dashboard and centre console. Remove heater complete and matrix etc, new valve and reassemble! Simples!

        Really??

You need to be a contortionist to get to it but removing the front seat helps. the O ring will need replacing, get one from a Stag supplier as size is critical.
Do not get new valve as many wrong size. Replace centre screw with a longer one to give you something to pull, a sidelight screw is the right thread.(1/4”BSF??)
You may lose a cupful of water, clean valve and housing, replace O ring and assemble with a smear of waterproof grease.
Pray that cable outer sheath is not detached from heater control.

The thread is 6-32 unc and a puller can be made using 22mm compression fitting nut and penny washer with long bolt

I made a tool several years ago consisting of a length of flat bar with a D-shaped hole in it. This fits snugly over the D-shaped end of the valve insert. The tool is fixed to the end of the valve and the leverage allows the valve to be twisted as it is pulled out. Used it recently to renew the o-rings and lubricate. If any member wants to borrow it, send me a PM.

              Hi

I also had the same problem a couple of years ago.

8 pages of advice here, with some pictures I took showing where the cable connects.

                Thanks everyone.
As always a wealth of experience shared. I'll now get on and tackle the problem.

                Cheers,

I discovered that if you go to one of your standard household light switches and take out one of the screws this fits the thread in the heater valve.
I removed my valve insert using a claw hammer (the claw part) and a suitably sized block of wood to lever out the valve.
                  Hope that made sense.

I did the same, but my heater was out of the parts car

Think socket and light switch mounting screws are M3.5. Readily available at most DIY stores.

Well, the valve was fine, in good nick and the screw and valve removal were no problem. The issue seems to be that before the slide control gets to the cold stop (about an inch short) the lever mechanism fouls on the valve casing, thus limiting any further movement.. It is obviously a cable problem, though I could see nothing untoward. However, what ever I did has given me a degree of control from cold to some heat. This will do for now, but at some stage I will have to remove the complete heater unit and investigate further.

Were M 3.5mm screws around in those days, think originality?

Hi, If and when you take the heater out be aware on the heater base there drain tube that pokes down through the body and needs to be maneuvered about to get it out.
                            Cheers Ian A
