In a related sense, an ex colleague of mine (nicknamed Solly because of his nature) was given an Elan by his wife as a 50th birthday present, and at that time it was valued at £10K. The car, being somewhat unreliable and him not being mechanicaly minded, wasn't used too often and was mainly laid up in his garage.
When he got to 60 he got the car revalued, at a healthy £27K. About 6 month later he had his garage man collect the car to get it serviced and mot'd, which it achieved, but on the way home, at a set of traffic lights, a fuel hose broke, sprayed petrol over the exhaust, and the car burned.
He got the agreed value for the car, spent £10K on a used Boxter which, being suitably poseable and modernly reliable he, uses fairly often, and he banked the remainder, which satisfied his fiscal nature.
Our only surprise was it was with a third party when it burned.
John.
