I have noticed a smallish puddle of oil under the gearbox after an oil change. I was very careful when filling the gearbox. Never seen this before. only backed out and drove back into garage so oil not even slightly warm. Any thoughts....

Carefully position cardboard or newspaper on the floor under the gearbox then you can trace the area the oil is coming from. Dust that area of the box with talcum powder and an oil leak will leave a distinct trail.
If a manual box (I don't know Autos but suspect the same) check the breather hole is not blocked though that would be more of a problem on a used car with a hot (thus pressurised) gearbox. Even a moderate overfilling could not be expected to cause a leak on an unused car.

Quote:- Does it matter? Nice, maybe. Personally I never really notice - if I can help, I will.
I think it does matter for 2 reasons
1 We need to keep the tone of this forum friendly, matey, like a group of members having a noggin and natter at the local pub. Simple courtesies help maintain the right tone, and discourage the unfortunate tendency to slip into confrontation and aggravation which we have seen on here in the past, and which threatens to ruin the forum
2 We encourage members to use the search function to see if there problem has been discussed before. So, it is useful to know what was the outcome of a suggested fix. A response such:-- Fred's suggestion was great, but I also had to do ..... would be very helpful.
However, absence of a response must not be a reason to slip into confrontation and aggravation; a simple friendly prompt is adequate (which I think was the intended tone above?).'72 Manual O/d Saffron Yellow

Really sorry about not replying to post about rev counter. I am new to forums and still finding my way around. I think this is a great resource and certainly have no desire to upset anyone who is kind enough to respond.
With regards to the oil leak. It is my mates car and is a manual. He has tried to reach the oil breather hole but is unable to get to it.Furryfellow

That is the problem with the written word, easy to misinterpret the tone and meaning of what is being said.

Gearbox dripping oil after top-up - it is so easy to spill some oil on the web of the casting which runs below the filling hole on the side of the gearbox. If you are working from under the car, you can't see it, and because of its viscosity, it will be some time before it runs off.
That is the simplest explanation with least trauma.
At the other end of the scale, I have had a serious problem once where the overdrive casing was cracked around the bulge that houses the output shaft bearing. That took some finding because it was hidden behind the support bracket. I hope this is not your problem, but it should not have suddenly been seen after an oil change.
Talking of overdrive and oil change - do you have overdrive, and did you remove the sump plate to drain the oil from here? If so, was the gasket good enough to replace?'72 Manual O/d Saffron Yellow

Hi - It does have overdrive but i didn't remove the sump plate as it didn't seem necessary at the time. The suggestion that it could have been trapped oil on the housing that dribbled off when the car was moved forward is a very interesting one, and the one i'm going with for the moment! I'll be taking the car out for the first time in a couple of years after lots of work as soon as we get a dry day, so hopefully will be able to see whether or not i have a problem... Many thanks.Furryfellow
