That is really unfortunate. No comfort to you, but I often worry about the condition of any lifting gear used by delivery firms and the like onshore. When you see the level of control over lifting gear we have offshore, it beggars belief that people can get away with such poor quality onshore.
I bet the wire the shackle was attached too wasn't up to much either. They always seem to have broken strands and go all curly when there is no tension on them, indicating overloading at some time. Mention LOLER (Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations) to them and they haven't got a clue.
Hope your Stag is repairable. Straight back to Wards, I guess?
