Assistance when you breakdown - not likely

    Hi All

The wife is using my Nissan all this week for work so I have her GT6. Not normally a problem but we have an ongoing issue with the ignition/carbs which chose this morning to raise its ugly head againBroke down at a T junction whilst on my way to work. Car simply would not restart. To get out of way of the traffic I pushed the car round the corner and onto the pavement. Whilst doing that several cars and pedestrians passed me by. Did anybody stop to help me push the car. DID THEY BUGGER:X:X

Got the car running again but it didn't sound right so decided to go home, leave the car there and walk into work. I was nearly home when it broke down again:XThis time I was in the middle of the road negotiating the gap betwen two parked cars. So, I effectively blocked the road to all traffic. There was a car behind me and another one facing me. I quickly jumped out of the car and proceeded to push it out of the way whilst steering it around one of the parked cars. Did either of the other two drivers get out to assist? DID THEY BUGGER:X:XPushing up a gradientand trying to steer on your own is hard work and with the two numpties just sitting there I was close to saying "sod it". It was at that point that one of the drivers leaned out of his car and said "do you need any help?!". I just looked at himand he hopped out and gave me a hand. The other driver did nowt but look straight again as he sat in his stationary vehicle:X.

Got the car going again within a couple of minutes and made it home. Found a short on the coil connections this evening.

Is it just me, or are people less inclined to assist others at the roadside these days?:?

A chap near me got out of his car to assist a stranded motorist a few weeks ago.He slipped on the ice, broke his arm, and is unable to drive for 6 weeks:X

I'm sure you are right and it's probably because breaking down is so rare in modern vehicles that people generally don't know what it feels like to be pushing your car alone. You probably looked like you were managing OK?

I'm sure when you've rebuilt your Stag it will behave impeccably!

Maybe it will, may be it won't :?

I am not looking forward to commisioning it. One of the golden rules of fault finding is to only change one ite,m/setting at a time and then review the results. Can't do that with the Stag as the entire thing has been in bits and everything has changed. GULP:shock:

I broke down in a Series 2 Xj6 once, right at the traffic lights on a dual carrageway....

Had the bonnet up struggling to find the fault, a mile or two of traffic snarled up behind me... one car with 4 lads in it as they pashed me told me I should have pushed the car off the road down a side turning at the lights....

I told 'em bluntly what they could do with their suggestion,

If no one stuck in the traffic wanted to help me push it, I was buggered if I was gonna do it on my own, I was stuck and going no where, made no odds to me how long people were stuck behind me if they weren't prepared to offer help.

That was too mcuh car to push on my own :?

I stopped last year for a French Blue GT6 near me, nothing I could do for him but was nice to have a chat.

Having rebuilt a few classics I know what you mean, it's a bit nerve racking the first few miles after a major rebuild - until confidence grows. .... but you are doing a great job there andI'm sure thatonce you've got over the first week you'll absolutely love the car.

Best of luck and I look forward to reading all about your first driving experience!! Can't be long now.
