    Dynamic timing with lumenition

    Can anyone tell me if the standard timing applies when you have lumenition module fitted or do you add a degree or 2, also can anyone recommend a different coil that suits electronic ignition.

    The Bosch Red coil seems to get a lot of good user reviews and apparently is very tolerant of the heat in the standard Stag position - I bought one on the strength of this. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-02211...c=1&th=1&psc=1

    Available from loads of suppliers - don't know whether any are dodgy copies - I used a reputable source.

    Can't see why you'd need to change the timing when fitting a Lumenition. Mine had one fitted when I got it, so no direct experience.

      As above timing is the same however the crank pulley is rubber cored which eventually starts to break down so the timing marks are only ever a guide. Set the timing and drive the car (uphill is best), does it pink? Advance the timing a degree or two and try again untill it pinks then back off the timing a degree or two.

      If you have not bought a strobe light yet then ensure you get one with an adjustable advance. Adustable is strobe is really usefull to have someone work the throttle to various revs and using the strobe check the automatic advance from the bob weights.

          Hopefully amazon are delivering my strobe light tonight with adjustable advance so I might be doing some late night timing!!. Also thanks for the replies on the coil so I will be ordering one of the bosch red type.also am I right in thinking that the carbs are balanced by adjusting the mixture and can only be down with engine not running ?

            There is also the Carb linkage synchronisation / balancing which is done with engine running and a Dellorto Carb balancer or similar such as:-



            This ensure that both carbs start to open at the same time and there is not a mismatch between the carbs it really improves pulling away from stationary, and helps give a smooth tickover.

              The correct procedure is to check/set everything on the ignition/timing front (including checking valve clearances and spark plug gaps) then look at the carbs. The carbs first need balancing as regards airflow for which you need a small piece of tube to listen to the hiss at the intakes or a flow meter tool like the one that Alan linked to. You need to disconnect the throttle linkages so that you can adjust each carb independently. Once balanced you can then tweak the mixture on each carb. Ideally using a CO meter but good results can be achieved by using the "piston" lift method. Correct mixture is when the idle increases slightly and then returns when the piston is lifted just under 1mm. This is all in the R.O.M. section 19.15.02 and is straight forward as long as you are methodical and do things in order. (and there are no other faults like sticking vacuum advance or air leaks around the carbs of crank breather pipework).
