    Spin on oil filter conversion

In my last new topic of the evening () I wanted to post a picture of my spin on oil filter converter that I took off a few weekends ago. After reading all the discussion on the forum and in the technical reprints of the worries that some folks had about their internal sealing I thought I'd have a look and at least replace the O rings. This is what I found:

Despite the fact that the internal O ring has flats on each side (indicating that it was compressed) it has gone a little D shaped and I'd hazzard a guess that it was letting oil past it without it going through the filter. The tide marks on the side before I cleaned it would certainly bear out this theory.

Did anyone ever come to a conclusion as to how to be sure they seal correctly? This has me a little worried to be honest. I think I'll probably machine a steel insert to go in the middle which ensures that the O ring is properly trapped and cannot migrate under the pressure of the oil.

I think the supplied O ring is too thin TBH.

I fitted mine more than 20 years ago and at the time I replace the O ring with one of larger cross section. I did not think the supplied one would be compressed enough.

Only last year I stripped mine down to replace all the O rings around that area, oil pump etc, and the thickerO ring that I fitted was nicely squashed. Amazingly after a few minutes it has regained its shape...so as it had done its job nicely for 20 years and had not perished or hardened (viton), in it went back again!

Well I think I've sorted it. Not sure the picture shows it too well but I've machined up a thin steel insert which will ensure that the O ring is supported on both the inside and outside so quite simply has nowhere to go other than seal properly. I machined out the inside of the spin on filter converter and have pressed the steel insert in.

I'm happy that I can relax now, knowing that the ring won't be pushed out of the way by the pressurised oil.
