If you took off the front pipe that comes from the pump cover you would probably be able to a get camera down there (I have one that works with an i-phone but where are you Dave) or you might be able to put something down the hole like a piece of metal coat hanger maybe and get someone to turn the engine while feeling for movement on the end of the hanger - If your'e using the hanger method I'd put a mark on it to coincide where the end would be if it was touching the rotor, bit of guesswork but I'm sure it could be done....

WoulNote to self - read more carefully.dn't imagine you would hear anything whilst you were cranking the engine Paul. Idling may be.
Dave are you sure you've got a waterpump in there (;
