The original metal plates were paint the same colour as the car -
On my car (1977) the plates are matt black, and I have owned the car since 1985, and they have never been any other colour, at least since then.Regards, Steve

Afternoon all,
Mine were painted body colour, but started showing wee bits of surface rust along some edges, soooo......I succumbed to the lure of "bling", and have replaced them with the laser-cut stainless ones with the leaping Stag on, from a reputable supplier on Ebay.
I humbly beg forgiveness from the purists.....but my "inner magpie" likes the shiny bits holding an unmarked bonnet pad.

I engraved my own and made a bonnet spring and stainless pad bar, easy to do
