    Quill Shaft Outer.

Hopefully not a silly question ( Never any silly questions only silly answers ? ).

I’m in the process of rebuilding a Differential. One of the things I am going to do is to is strengthen the Quill Shaft, there are many posts about this. My question is what is it made of ?. Is it cast as this could be interesting with my welding skills or is it “normal” metal. I admit I have not looked too closely at it yet, any advice as always gratefully received.

    Many thanks, Don Kennedy

    Hi Don,

I'm pretty sure it is machined from mild steel. Someone will tell you if i'm wrong, I'm sure!

When we strengthened mine, we just cut four strips of suare bar (about 10mm square is my memory serves me correctly), and welded equidistantly around the circumferance. Still working well 7 years later. Just ensure you remove anything affected by heat, ie: bearing, as it wll lose all its grease when you weld if not.

    hope this helps,

    Peter

I assume you are talking about the nose extension (the quill shaft housing). There is a risk when you weldit that it will distort. I had two bearings fail until I dicovered that the housing had gone oval and was squashing the bearing.

        Many thanks for the replies.

I had thought about distortion but as I will be replacing the bearing I will leave the original/ old bearing in place, that should help ?.
