I removed this so the door can be painted and it had a thin double sided tape fixing it in place
Whats best to use to put it back together silicone sealant or double sided again?
Personally I have always used tape for that sort of thing. It is instant and "clean". Using mastic or any other type of sealant/adhesive can be messy, doesn't always stick instantly possibly allowing a bit of creep, and is also a pain to clean off should you ever need to remove the sheet at a later date. If you don't have double sided tape then you can usually just tape round the edges with single sided tape - masking tape works quite well, just wipe the surface you are sticking to with a degreaser (meths is OK and won't damage your paint) to remove dust and dirt before trying to stick the tape on.

I always find double sided tape is the easiest and least messy without risk of transfer of adhesive to the interior of the car. The fixing does not need to be strong as the membrane is sandwiched and held in place. I also found that thin plastic sheet is easier to punch through with card fixings than the heavy duty sheet.
