    Front Wheel Castor

Hi, has anyone got a good way to measure the existing castor angle on the front wheels? I know it should be 2 1/2 degrees positive. I'm thinking I will need to make up a special tool to bolt to the hub such that I can get a measurement? This is my first check to discover why the steering is not as positive as it should be and straight line travel is not that simple!! I will also check rack is greased properly. Any thoughts/suggestions welcome….. meanwhile, enjoy New Years Eve out of the garage (until tomorrow...……..) Thanks,
    Tim

Suggestion, run it into a tyre specialist and get them to use a Hunter on it, with a print out on ALL the steering suspension settings you'll be able to make a comprehensive judgement. Measuring just the one item will take you lots longer than paying a small charge for the readout will cost pro rota.

Local Kwik fit has a Hunter, put Stag on it, but It is not on their database so they didn’t charge me, I have the printout of all measurements.

tyre pressures and tyre choose can affect the centre point steering low pressure can cause slow steering responds and high pressure can mak the car wander

Happy New Year and thanks all, I will run over to our local Kwik fit. Did check tyre pressures and they are a bit high - I have 185/70 on all corners and see that they should be at 26psi front and 30psi rear - I will reduce accordingly.

            Hello Tim,

When we lived in Naphill, I used to use Merrits Tyres at Chalfont. They set up my 4-wheel tracking on the Stag (I took a set of shims) and they were a good outfit.

Thanks Dave, will give them a call. What are these shims you refer to - I can't find any mention or reference to shims in the manuals or spares books (Rimmer etc)? Where do they fit and where does one buy them from?

I think I bought mine from Paddocks, but I believe that most of the main suppliers sell them. The are used to adjust various bits of the suspension geometry to get all four wheels pointing in the right directions.
